2016 Iowa City West High boys bowling preview

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– West High bowler Patrick Wood won the Class 3A State Bowling Tournament back in February. Odds are he would put up an equally impressive showing in the 2016-2017 season for Mike Mellecker and the Trojans. However, he’s moved out of town and his days in West High green are over.
But, Mellecker, the 10-year coach for West’s boys and girls bowling teams, is encouraged by the fact he has six returning varsity winners with a lot of match time.
On the flip side, though, he’ll need all six to be in top form on a squad with an even dozen bowlers.

Experience and newcomer alike boost Women of Troy on the lanes

IOWA CITY– Mike Mellecker has a problem, but it’s one he’s happy to have. Mellecker is the 10-year coach of the Iowa City West High boys and the girls bowling programs. His girls program went 4-10 overall last year with a 3-8 showing in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC). He’s got 10 starters back, including an All-Conference Second Team selection and two Honorable Mention picks. Mellecker also has a bunch of newcomers to the sport.
So what’s his problem? What to do with so much firepower.

2016-17 CCA girls’ basketball preview: All of the pieces are in place for success

Clear Creek Amana varsity girls’ basketball

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– P.J. Sweeney took over the top spot for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls basketball program in 2014 and has exuded optimism throughout his tenure. On the eve of the 2016-2017 season, Sweeney is even more encouraged and optimistic than ever about the Clippers’ prospects.
“With four-and-a-half starters and nine letter-winners returning, we have plenty of experience coming back,” Sweeney said.
But the news only gets better for the Creek Girls.

Hawkeye men REBUILD

Hawk Talk

What do you do when you lose four seniors who combined to win 89 games in the last four years?
Media Day for the University of Iowa men’s basketball team was Oct. 5 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and plenty of optimism was around.
You start rebuilding by bringing in a top recruiting class, led by power forward Tyler Cook (6-9, 253), rated a four-star recruit.
Add three Iowa players, who grew up Hawkeye fans, and Isaiah Moss (6-5, 192), a guard that could redshirt.
Iowa Head Coach Fran McCaffery says Cook has the tools to be a star in the Big Ten.

Hawkeye Women RELOAD

Hawk Talk

The Iowa women’s basketball team returns four starters and a freshman class ranked seventh in the nation, so it’s not a surprise head coach Lisa Bluder is ready for the season to begin.
“I really feel that we are the deepest we’ve been in a long time,” said coach Bluder. “I think we are the most balanced that we’ve been in a long, long time.”
It starts with preseason All-Big Ten pick, Ally Disterhoft.
What else can you say about the former West High Trojan named Miss Basketball her senior year in high school?

Spartans take round one

Win over bobcats advances Solon to face No. 1 Pella Friday, Nov. 4, at home

SOLON– After several dreary days, the sun peeked from the heavens and shone favorably on the Spartans.
Benton Community’s Bobcats traveled to Solon for the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs and the Spartans’ responded with an offense that wracked up 49 points and a defense that limited the Bobcats to just 14.
That effort places the Spartans on a collision course with No. 1-ranked Pella on Friday, Nov. 4, at Spartan Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.

Shafer leads Solon girls to 15th place at state cross country meet

FORT DODGE– Solon’s girls showed they were up to the challenge with a 15th place showing in the 2016 Class 3A state cross country meet Oct. 29 in Fort Dodge.
Though ‘last’ in that championship field, they outpointed every 3A team sitting at home for the day. Their finish matched a slow, steady improvement from middle of the pack showings early in the season to conference and district meet runner-up finishes and a No. 14 ranking from the Iowa Association of Track Coaches heading into state.

Iowa City West upsets Bettendorf

Trojans live to fight another day with 24-17 win in first round of 4A playoffs

BETTENDORF– They puzzled the pundits and baffled the Bulldogs as Iowa City West High’s 10th-ranked Trojans pulled off a 24-17 upset over No. 5 Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 28, in the Bulldogs’ kennel to survive the first round of the Class 4A football playoffs.
Bettendorf has often been a wrench in the gears of the Trojan football juggernaut, having knocked West out of championship contention in 2011 with a 45-13 pounding, and again in 2013 (27-24) as well as during the regular season in 2014 and 2015.

They advanced to the Region 6 Final Monday, Oct. 31, at West High against Bettendorf, who beat West in late August in tournament play, 2-1, and brought a 20-11 record into the final.
