Bolts, Clippers and Trojans run at State Cross Country Meet

West’s Bailey Nock comes in second

FORT DODGE– Runners from Clear Creek Amana (CCA), Liberty High and Iowa City West High competed Saturday, Oct. 28, in the 2017 State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge.
West High’s Bailey Nock, a senior, was the runner-up in the Class 4A girls’ race. Nock finished roughly 15 seconds behind winner Paige Horner of Johnston. The West High Women of Troy were fifth in team points behind team champion Johnston, runner-up Dubuque Senior, Waukee and Dubuque Hempstead.
The West High Trojans were 10th in team points with Kolby Greiner, a senior, finishing 29th in 16:20.8.

CPU sweeps CCA, 3-0, in regional semifinal

CENTER POINT– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball season came to a quick end Tuesday, Oct. 24, in Center Point, as the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CPU) swept them, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-18), in a Class 4A regional semifinal match.
The Clippers were un-ranked in Class 4A and held a 23-19 record entering the contest, while the Pointers were the seventh-ranked team with a 31-10 showing.

MARSHALLTOWN– Iowa City West High’s swimming and diving team, with members from Liberty High, will compete Friday, Nov. 2 (diving), and Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA (108 Washington, St.) after qualifying for state Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28, in regional competition in Marshalltown. The team was second in points behind regional champion Waukee.

CCA’s Trap Shooting Team wraps up the 2017 season

HOMESTEAD– “Pull!” The command sent a bright orange clay disc into the late afternoon sky, followed by the report of a shotgun, a puff of smoke and the target being broken into fragments as the shot hit its mark.
Four more shooters took aim and reduced the targets to chunks before the quintet rotated to their next shooting position. Five shooters, five shots each, and then step aside and let the opposition take their 25 shots.
That’s how a trap shooting match goes.

Spartans end regular season 9-0 with 43-0 win over Trojans

Solon hosts Decorah Friday in first round of 3A football playoffs

SOLON– The Spartans ended the perfect regular season at 9-0 (7-0) with a 43-0 exclamation-point victory over the Fairfield Trojans Friday, Oct. 20, at Spartan Stadium.
A Senior Night win capped the Spartans’ perfect season of “Do what we do!” as the Solon defense held Fairfield to 53 total yards passing and just two yards rushing on 21 carries in 48 minutes of football.
The defensive performance set up Solon’s offense to accumulate 162 yards passing, going 10-17, and rush for 214 yards on 33 carries.

Lady Spartans just miss qualifying as a cross country team

SOLON– A season spent near the top of the pack has paid off for Solon freshman Kiersten Conway. She will be on the starting line Oct. 28 at the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge. Conway was sixth in the Oct. 19 regional qualifying meet in Solon.

Solon falls to West Liberty in first round of playoffs

WEST LIBERTY– Too bad it couldn’t have gone on a little longer.
But the season for the Solon varsity volleyball team came to an end in the first round of the Class 3A District 7 playoffs Oct. 18 in West Liberty.
The Lady Spartans pushed the Comets, formerly ranked No. 13, to the limit but fell in five sets (25-15, 14-25, 25-27, 25-22, 15-10).

Boys Basketball grades 3-6: Registration will start around Nov. 17, with a coaches meeting to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Games are played on Saturdays in January and February, tentatively starting Jan. 20, in the Lakeview Elementary gymnasium. Registration forms will be distributed to Solon students through the school and also available on the Solon Parks and Recreation website and at City Hall.

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team survived the quarterfinal round of Class 4A postseason play with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-14) sweep of the visiting Tigers from Grinnell Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Shauntina Williams led the Clipper offense with a dozen kills. Karsyn Stratton produced seven kills, five came from Jane Willms and four from Hailey Pollock. Zoe Boehme made 19 assists, Cheyanne Bunch had 13 assists and Jordan Neely came up with 22 digs while Lauren Riggle recorded 11 digs.

IC West finishes regular season 9-0 with 55-7 win over Ottumwa

OTTUMWA– Iowa City West High’s Trojans rolled into Ottumwa Friday, Oct. 20, for the ninth and final week of regular season varsity football with an 8-0 record and the Class 4A District 8 championship already clinched.
The Bulldogs were merely the latest victims as they sat at the bottom of the district with a 0-4 district record and 0-8 showing for the season.
West ended up overhauling Ottumwa, 55-7, and posted its sixth undefeated regular season in school history, with the last being in 2012.

Creek XC boys are state bound after Pella meet

PELLA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity boys cross country squad earned some bragging rights Thursday, Oct. 19, at its Class 3A state qualifying meet at Central College, in Pella. The Creek Boys qualified four individuals and earned a second-place finish to team champion Dallas Center-Grimes.
Brandon Barker (freshman), Jack Sexton (sophomore), Cole Liebe (junior) and Nick O’Connor (sophomore) qualified with fourth-, ninth-, 12th- and 13th-place finishes, respectively.

CENTER POINT– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Middle School cross country squads competed Monday, Oct. 9, in the WaMaC Conference Middle School Championships in Center Point.
CCA’s seventh grade girls were the runner-up squad with 53 points behind champion Mount Vernon-Lisbon (33 points) and led by Haidyn Barker in a second-place performance in 13:42, just four seconds behind winner Marleigh Louvar of Independence.
