A good win

By Don Lund

Last week I talked about Iowa playing hard against fourth-ranked Ohio State and going into the fourth quarter, they were tied at 24. Iowa lost 34-24, but battled hard until the end.
This week there would be no moral victories. Either Iowa has a good win or a bad loss…
Thank goodness for Jake Rudock, C.J Fiedorowicz and Louis Trinca-Pasat.
Jake threw an 8-yard pass as he was falling down to C.J. in the end zone in overtime to give Iowa a 17-10 lead.

Spartans tame Bobcats in first half, 43-7

Solon faces Western Dubuque tonight in first round of postseason

VAN HORNE– The halftime score was the final score.
The Solon Spartans rolled up 43 points in the first half against Benton Community in Van Horne Friday night, and that’s all that was needed.
The Spartans wrapped up the Class 3A District 6 championship outright with the 43-7 win, moving Solon’s record to 8-1 on the season and undefeated within the district.

Three runners on to state

SOLON– Three Solon runners will be in the starting boxes Saturday at the State Class 3A cross country meet. Junior Alex Smith qualified at the Oct. 24 district meet at Solon for the girls. On the boys’ side, junior Ty Appleget and senior Patrick McGill made the field. Smith runs at noon Saturday, Nov. 2, at Kennedy Park at Fort Dodge. Appleget and McGill get the gun at 12:30 p.m.

Smith goes, team stays…

Freshmen shine in West’s 3-1 win over Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS– The curtain came down on the regular season for the West High Women of Troy varsity volleyball squad with a 3-1 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie in the birds’ gym Tuesday, Oct. 22.
A tooth-and-nail 25-22 first set win by West turned into a reversal of fortunes and a 22-25 loss in the second set. The Women of Troy dominated the third set 25-15 and put the birds away in the fourth 25-14. After the match, the unflappable coach Kathy Bresnahan was a bit surprised at how things turned out.

Loss ends CCA football season

TIFFIN– Another season on the gridiron goes into the books as the 2013 varsity campaign ended Friday, Oct. 25, for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers. A 42-28 loss to the Maquoketa Cardinals and a win by the Marion Indians over Central Clinton-DeWitt wiped out any chance for the Clippers to play in the postseason playoffs.
The Indians and Clippers tied in Class 3A district 6 with 4-5 records overall, but Marion’s district record is 3-3 to CCA’s 2-4, giving the Indians the nod.

Progress?

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund

I know the Hawkeyes lost to Ohio State Saturday at Columbus, 34-24, but they hung with the fourth-ranked Buckeyes and it was all tied up 24-24 at the start of the fourth quarter.
I’m not into moral victories, but I thought Iowa played its best half of football all year when they led 17-10 at halftime.
Ed Podolak, who is Iowa’s radio color commentary, said it was the best half of football the Hawks have played in three years.
I like Ed’s assessment better.

Lady Spartans avenge loss to West Delaware in final

MARION– It was a clean sweep for the Lady Spartans at last week’s WaMaC volleyball tournament.
Solon didn’t drop a set in pool or bracket play, outlasting both Marion and West Delaware in the semifinals and finals at Marion Thursday night.
The Lady Spartans defeated Benton Community (21-7, 21-10), DeWitt Central (21-10, 21-13) and Marion (21-14, 21-18) in pool play Tuesday at Manchester, then faced Dyersville Beckman (25-13, 25-19), Marion (25-22, 25-22) and then West Delaware (25-23, 25-22) in the highly contested championship bracket.

Spartans clip Cardinals for district title

MAQUOKETA– It took a while to get going, but once Solon’s offense came to life, it helped turn a 10-point deficit into an 11-point halftime lead.
In a wild, back-and-forth scoring barrage, the Spartan football team outlasted the Maquoketa Cardinals to claim the Class 3A District 6 regular season title Friday in Maquoketa, 49-31.
Although Solon struck first on a 35-yard interception returned for touchdown by Jacob Black, the Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of a 17-7 deficit early in the second quarter.

TIFFIN– Football is a game full of statistics. For example, in Friday night’s contest between the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers and the Indians of Marion, the Indians had 287 yards of offense to CCA’s 269, and had the ball for just over 26 minutes to Creek’s 21 minutes of possession.
In the end, the most important statistic of the game was found on the scoreboard at the conclusion: CCA 21, Marion 7.
