Hawkeye women win big

Hawk Talk

Iowa rolled over the Marist Red Foxes, 87-65, Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a first-round victory in the NCAA tournament.
The game was supposed to be close because the Red Foxes had five players averaging in double figures like the Hawks. They were 27-6 coming into the game, Iowa was 26-8, they were a good passing team and played good defense.
There were a few things missing.

Last man standing

Tony Ramos has been one of the most exciting wrestlers at Iowa for the last four years. The 133-pound senior from Illinois was missing two things– a Big Ten championship and an NCAA title.
Two weeks ago he won his first Big Ten title and last Saturday at Oklahoma City he picked up his first NCAA championship.
Tony scored two nearfall points in the first tiebreak to defeat Wisconsin’s fifth-seeded Tyler Graff, 3-1, in overtime.

Lions & Tigers & Wildcats?

When the Hawkeyes lost their last regular season game to Illinois, 66-63, I thought, or was hoping, that game was going to be the low point of the season.
I really hate it when I’m wrong.
The 67-62 loss to Northwestern last Thursday was not only the lowest point of the season, it came against a team that Iowa has beaten five straight times, the last two times by over 25 points.
Fran McCaffery has some major challenges ahead and the main ones are not even related to Iowa basketball.
I don’t have any kids, but still I couldn’t imagine finding out your 13-year-old son has a tumor.

5K fun run/walk in honor of Brett Smith will be held in Solon on April 5

Keeping his memory alive

SOLON– Although Brett Smith passed away nearly two years ago, his memory is still strong in the hearts of his friends, family, and community.
Sarah Drea and Brady Smith, first cousins of Brett, are organizing an untimed running and walking event in honor of their family member.
“It’s just a way for us to remember him and share in his memory,” said Drea. “It’s something that’s not sad. We just thought it would be a good way to keep his memory out there, get together, and celebrate his life.”

Three in a row, way to go!

DES MOINES– In 1952, the Davenport High School’s boys’ basketball team won their third consecutive state tournament championship. In 1984, the Royals of Cedar Rapids Regis achieved the “three-peat.” No other team has done that since.
Until last week, when Bergie’s Boys rolled into “The Well.”

Four state track qualifiers return to team

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– A record number of athletes have joined the ranks of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys track and field team, and that gives coach Tony Brack a reason to be optimistic.
“This will provide a developing depth to our team,” the coach said. “The future of CCA track and field will continue to dominate with our experienced upperclassmen leading and helping our new members.”
