Spring Football

Hawk Talk

This is the third part of a review of the University of Iowa football program this spring.
This week, I’ll talk about the quarterbacks and defensive line.
Jake Rudock is the number-one quarterback in spring training.
If Jake stays healthy, I see no reason he won’t be number one in the opening game against UNI Aug. 30.
The 6-3, 208-pound junior was 204-346 (59 percent) passing for 2,383 yards, 18 touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and Iowa finished 8-5.

He did it HIS WAY

Randall bows out with few regrets

SOLON– Typically, when a long-tenured coach leaves an athletic program under a cloud of controversy, they say they want to focus on the positives and not dwell on the negatives.
Brad Randall, now the former Solon High School varsity boys’ basketball coach, is no exception.
With a winning record full of accomplishments, it’s easy for him to emphasize the highlights.

A great start to the season

Lady Spartans overwhelm West Liberty in first home game

MARION– Solon’s Lady Spartan soccer squad traveled north to Marion last Tuesday and won their first game of the season, 4-0.
Junior Ali Herdliska scored the first goal on a great shot from the outside four minutes into the first half with an assist from Senior Anna Seydel.
The new season has brought strong freshmen to the team.
Ninth grader Josie Durr dominated the scoreboard with one goal in the first half and two more in the second.

Girls win Williamsburg track meet

Lady Spartans score in all but one event

Heading toward the middle of the track season, Solon’s girls continue to rely on balanced performances throughout the lineup. However, key contributions are showing up from several freshmen and a few other new faces in the lineup.
Solon won the April 8 Williamsburg Invitational with wins in seven events, and by scoring in all but one of the 19 events.

Solon basketball players honored

SOLON– Several Spartan basketball players recently received postseason honors.
Senior Austin Miller was named to the WaMaC first team all-conference team, as well as to the first team all-substate team.
Junior Emilio Villagrana was a second team WaMaC selection, while seniors Jaden Durr and Nick Shelman both received honorable mentions.
Senior Ethan Ahern was named to the academic all-conference squad.

Boys soccer team defeats Marion and West Delaware to move to 3-4

SOLON– So far, the Spartans are undefeated at home.
Brandon Childs scored two goals on assists from Andrew West and Dylan Doyle as Solon’s varsity soccer team shut out Mmarion, 2-0, at Spartan Stadium Tuesday, April 8.
The Spartans went 1-2 at a tournament in Hudson over the weekend, defeating West Delaware, 4-0, but falling to Hudson and Postville to move to 3-4 on the year.
Against West Delaware, Childs and West teamed up for all of the scoring and assists. Childs had three goals and one assist, while West had one goal and three assists.
