Garner Elementary girls run toward success

NL school holds 2015 Girls on the Run program

NORTH LIBERTY– For girls who participate in the after-school program Girls on the Run, running is more than just a way to encourage healthy habits.
It’s a way to encourage a healthy sense of self-worth.
Esther Baker, Executive Director of Girls on the Run Eastern Iowa, has seen girls blossom through participating in the organization.
She recalled one student who came into the program with extremely low self-confidence. When given a compliment, she would respond self-deprecatingly and had difficulty interacting with the other girls and her coaches.

This Was Their Year

Nearad, Ira combine to power Lady Spartans past No. 2 Benton

SOLON– It was the match-up everyone expected.
Benton Community and Solon had split a regular season doubleheader in Van Horne when the Bobcats were the number-one team in Class 3A, and the Lady Spartans were ranked second.
The rematch in the 3A softball championship game Friday at the Rogers Sports Complex near Fort Dodge didn’t disappoint, at least for Solon fans.
Senior Taylor Nearad’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning provided the margin of victory, and senior Emily Ira struck out 14 batters to power Solon past Benton to a final score of 3-1.

Ira pitches three-hitter; Nearad, Herdliska homer

FORT DODGE– First came the semifinal.
Solon’s Lady Spartans blew past defending 3A champ Clarke in the state softball tournament quarterfinals, but standing in the way on the road to the final was just one more team– No. 8 Center Pont-Urbana (CPU).
The Stormin’ Pointers of the WaMaC West placed second in their half of the conference behind No. 2 Benton Community, and had won nine of their last 10 games heading into the state tournament. CPU had been swept by the Lady Spartans during a regular season doubleheader June 17 in Solon.

Seven Solon softball players named first team all-conference

SOLON– Most of the members of the Solon varsity softball team have received all-conference WaMaC honors.
The conference released its 2015 list on Thursday, July 8, and seven Solon starters were named to the first team, while two others were awarded honorable mention status.
Solon Head Softball Coach Jim White was named Coach of the Year for the third time.
Emily Ira, McKenna Miller, Monika Bevans, Ali Herdliska, Sydney Lawson, Taylor Nearad and Jess Heick were named all-conference first team, while Nichole Oberthien and Lexi Stebral were named to the Honorable Mention team.

Claire and Kali

Claire Till and Kali Peschel have a total of 22 starts in their three years of playing for the Hawkeyes, with Kali having started all 22 times.
Going into their senior seasons, even with only 22 starts between them, you can ask any of their teammates or coaches and they will tell you they are just as important as Samantha Logic, Melissa Dixon or Bethany Doolittle were last season.
Both Claire and Kali are really good leaders on and off the court and have helped make the chemistry of the team work and provide a winning attitude.
