North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls and boys basketball teams both fell victim to the Trojans of Fairfield High School Friday, Jan. 26, at home in a varsity doubleheader.
The Liberty girls fell 67-46 to Fairfield, trailing throughout the contest. The Trojans led 12-10 at the end of the first period and were up a commanding 40-22 at halftime. Fairfield poured in 21 points in the third period to take a comfortable 61-33 lead into the final quarter.

Sam Stevens produced the Creek Boys’ best finish with a third-place showing at 113 pounds while Andrew Rohret and Tanner Cochran were fourth at 145 and 220 pounds, respectively.
West Delaware took the Team Championship with 214.5 points while Solon took the runner-up spot with 195.0.

King and Queen Pins split

West and City High bowlers split in rivalry match

IOWA CITY– The King and Queen Pin have split for one year. The pins, traveling trophies for the annual rivalry match between Iowa City West High and Iowa City, City High bowlers, went their separate ways Friday, Jan. 26, after the Trojans and Little Hawks met at Colonial Lanes. The West High girls kept the Queen Pin for the second year in a row, and ninth time since 2004-05 when the couple debuted, while the City High boys claimed the King Pin for the first time since 2010-11. The Trojan boys have also been keepers of the pin nine times since 2004-05.

Lightning grapplers struggle

DeWITT– Liberty High’s varsity wrestlers faced stiff competition Thursday, Jan. 25, on the road in DeWitt. The Lightning squared off against the Central Clinton Sabers and the Marion Indians and wound up on the wrong side of the final score in both duals.
Marion defeated Liberty, 61-15, with Jared Alger (132 pounds) taking a 4-1 decision from Marion’s Austin Fritz, while Ashton Barker (145) pinned the Indians’ Zach Cochran in 4:36 and Drew Snyder (152) pinned Marion’s Ben Gibson in 2:41.

Moore basket edges CCA past South Tama, 41-40

TAMA– Head Coach Brandon Clubb’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team rebounded from a 49-21 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg with a 41-40 upset win over the Trojans of South Tama Friday, Jan. 26, in Tama.
The Clippers led 15-6 at the end of the first period and held a slim 25-23 edge at halftime. The Trojans made it a close battle in the third, taking the quarter 32-33 before some last-minute dramatics by the Creek Boys.
“Darius Moore hits a shot to go up by one (point) with about a minute left,” Clubb said. “CCA defends the last possession by South Tama for the win.”

CCA alumnus shooting for RedTails

MARENGO, Ohio– Emily Klein, a graduate of Clear Creek Amana High School, competed in the 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) College National Tournament at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, Oct. 27-29, 2017, as a member of the Hawkeye Community College RedTails. A sophomore at Hawkeye, Klein placed 17th overall out of 31 female athletes with 497 birds total over the course of the three-day event.

Road trips for women

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had two road games last week, losing at Nebraska 74-65 and Minnesota, 77-72
For the second game in a row, the Hawks only had two players in double figures, couldn’t hit the outside shot and lost to the Cornhuskers last week at Lincoln.
Megan Gustafson did her best to keep Iowa in the game with 29 points, 18 rebounds, one assist, two blocked shots and a steal.
It wasn’t enough and the Hawkeyes lost their second straight.
The biggest stat was Nebraska going 9-25 from the 3-point line, Iowa 0-7.

Two more losses

Hawk Talk

The men’s basketball season continues to spiral downward with two losses last week.
The Hawks lost a road game to Rutgers, 80-64, and then lost at home to Purdue.
In the Rutgers game, Iowa got beat in almost every category.
Points in the paint: Rutgers 34, Iowa 22.
Points off turnovers: Rutgers, 24-6.
Second-chance points: 14-13.
Fast break points: 16-2.
Bench points: 15-10.
I’ve been saying all season how the Hawkeyes have so much depth in the front court but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them miss more point-blank shots.

Wrestlers lose to 2nd-ranked Ohio State

Hawk Talk

I didn’t think Iowa had much of a chance against the Buckeyes until Spencer Lee got the Hawks going with a big upset at 125 pounds.
Nathan Tomasello was ranked first in the nation coming into the meet, but Spencer did a great job of riding Nathan out the whole second period, getting an escape in the third and with riding time won, 3-2.
What a huge win.
What a fun wrestler to watch.
Iowa won only three more matches as the Buckeyes won the meet, 22-12.

Spartans fall short

Coons’ 33 points not enough in OT 63-61 loss

SOLON– The just don’t get much closer than that.
Tied at 57 after a see-saw battle through the first four quarters, Western Dubuque used a 6-4 advantage in overtime to defeat Solon’s varsity boys, 63-61, at home Jan. 19.
The loss dropped the Spartans to 9-5 on the season.
In each of three losses in 2018, Solon has scored 61 points. The last two, on the road at Mount Vernon Jan. 12 and home Friday against Western Dubuque, were 63-61 margins.
The Spartans and the Bobcats were neck-and-neck throughout the game, with the lead never moving past four points in the first half.
