Solon opens gridiron season at Iowa City Regina Friday

SOLON– It’s just one game.
But it is against Iowa City Regina.
The Solon varsity football team will open its season on the road Friday, Aug. 28, in Iowa City against the Regals, and while Head Football Coach Kevin Miller knows you can’t put too much into one game, a lot of people will be watching the annual non-conference rivalry.
“This is a nine-game schedule. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves and focus simply on one game,” Miller said after concluding practice Tuesday.

NLYBS Fall Fun Ball starts Monday, Aug. 31, partners with Diamond Dreams

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fifth year in a row, North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) will be providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for boys and girls ages 6-13.
The season will consist of five sessions, on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Aug. 31, skipping Sept. 7, and ending Oct. 5. Rain make-up will be Oct. 12.
The sessions will focus on skill development for half of the time and half will be spent scrimmaging.

Five seniors to lead CCA in 2015 volleyball

Clippers hope to return to state

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– History was made last year by the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team as they appeared in the state tournament for the first time since 1999 and only the third time in school history. The Clippers, under first-year head coach Jackie Clubb, knocked off Cedar Rapids Xavier, 3-0, in a Class 4A Regional Final to earn their state tourney berth. CCA went on to take down Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 3-2, in the state 4A quarterfinals before falling, 3-0, to Harlan in the semifinal round.

Depth and experience will fuel West’s drive toward the top

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Last year, West High’s Women of Troy made it to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids under first-year coach Randy Dolson. The team posted a 28-12 record overall after falling, 3-1, to Bettendorf in the quarterfinal round. The team lost three seniors– Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan and Laynie Whitehead– but Dolson is confident the 2015 squad will be a force to contend with.
Six juniors– Emma Norris, Ali Tauchen, Emily Halverson, Maddie Fay, Madi Ford and Gabi Delsing– make up the core of the starting line-up.

West XC boys rebuilding

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans under coach Brian Martz are rebuilding and reloading for the 2015 cross-country season. The Trojans finished ninth in overall points at last year’s state meet.
Akash Borde was the highest-finishing West runner at the state meet with a ninth-place finish. Borde was among the runners lost to graduation, but Martz returns seniors Nick Feeley (44th at State) and Matthew Schneider (70th) and junior Ali Ali (57th).

Talent in abundance for CCA cross country

Robison takes over boys’ program

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It’s a mix of change and consistency for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross-country teams this season. Ben Robison has taken the top spot in the boys’ program after a year as an assistant and a year as the middle school coach.
Robison takes over a program fourth in the state qualifying meet last year and returns three seniors and three juniors: Jake Tener (senior), Eric Douglass (senior), Kage Hinricks (senior), Luke Wingert (junior), Ben Oxley (junior) and Wyatt Sedlacek (junior).

Hawkeye football preview

Hawk Talk

For the next three weeks, I’ll break down the Iowa football team.
No doubt, last season was a frustrating.
After Iowa beat Illinois in the 10th game of the season, they were sitting at 7-3, 4-2 in the Big Ten, and if they won out they would win the Big Ten West. Of course, the Hawks dropped their last three games, including a blowout in the bowl game.
During Media Day last Saturday, Aug. 8, there was a feel of optimism, the Hawkeye players and coaches are ready to move on and make last season motivation for this year.
This week, we’ll examine the Hawkeye offense.

Matches for fourth through sixth grade will be on Thursday evenings and will start Sept. 10.

CCA’s Friday night lights get a little help from a star

Clipper football kicks off the season in a big way with singer Jake McVey

TIFFIN– There are many ways to conduct a fundraiser, but when Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes went looking for a way to raise some additional money for the high school football program, he decided to go big.

CCA football to build on historic season

“We don’t want to be a one-hit wonder”

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– 2014 was a record-setting year for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers on the gridiron. The team posted a 7-2 record in the regular season and won the first district championship in school history. The Clippers’ season ended in the first round of the playoffs as Newton edged out CCA, 23-21.
The father-and-son coaching duo of Ronnie and Matt Hughes spearheaded a change, not just in tactics on the turf, but in the overall climate of the CCA football program over the past two years.

Fifteen returning seniors lead West High football

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Fifteen experienced seniors will lead the West High Trojans in gridiron battle this season. The Trojans finished the 2014 season at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in Class 4A District No. 7, second behind Pleasant Valley (4-0 in the district). Their season ended in the Class 4A quarterfinals as Cedar Rapids Washington ran over them, 44-19, after first and second round wins over Ottumwa, 28-0, and Linn-Mar, 38-34.
