Women of Troy build on winning tradition

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy track and field team won the Regional Championship the last two seasons and held it for seven consecutive seasons (2003-2009) prior to that. It also holds six State Team Championships and held the MVC Championship from 2003-13.
They can be expected to make a run at all of these titles again this season.
Mike Parker is back for his 21st season as head coach with 16-year assistant Peggy McGuire, fifth-year assistant Danica Haight, second-year assistant Kim Humpal and first-year assistant Keaton Rickels.

West girls win abbreviated Washburn Invitational in Muscatine

MUSCATINE– Cold weather prompted an early end to the Dick Washburn Invitational track meet Friday, March 27, at Muscatine High School, won by the Iowa City West girls. West took the meet with 81 team points, besting squads from Linn-Mar (third), Cedar Rapids Prairie (tied with Pleasant Valley for fourth) and Cedar Rapids Washington (10th).
Valerie Welch won in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.82 seconds. Grace Young, Kia Noibi, Haley Roudabush and Welch brought the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay to a win in 1:12.68.

Clipper girls fourth, boys fifth at Bob Brown Invitational

Smith, Bandy ace the hurdles

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Iowa City Regina moved its annual Bob Brown Invitational to City High on Saturday, March 28, where the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls placed fourth in overall team points and the boys finished fifth.
Davenport Assumption won the girls’ meet while Anamosa took the boys’ competition.
The host Regals were second in girls’ action and fourth for the boys.

Oh so Sweet 16

Hawk Talk

The Iowa Hawkeye women finally did it... they are going to the Sweet 16 for the first time in Lisa Bluder’s coaching career.
It’s also the first time the Hawks made the Sweet 16 since 1996 as they beat a good Miami team, 88-70.
Last Sunday, before a crowd of over 7,000 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Hawkeyes played Iowa basketball.
That is balanced scoring (five in double-figures), great passing (17 assists), taking care of the ball (only 14 turnovers), bench scoring (Iowa 16, Miami 5) and cleaning the glass (Iowa 44 rebounds, Miami 35).

Iowa men advance against Davidson, fall to Zags

The Hawkeye men won their first game Friday but got knocked out by a pretty good Gonzaga team, 87-68, Sunday in Seattle, Wash.
The Zags reminded me of a combination of Purdue’s big boys down low and Wisconsin’s 3-point shooters.
It’s tough to beat anyone that shoots 61.5 percent from the floor (32-52) and 62.5 percent from 3-point range (10-16).
The Bulldogs go into the Sweet 16 with a 34-2 record and have the talent to get to the Final Four.
The Hawkeyes needed to play at their best to beat the Zags.

Wrestlers finish second

The Iowa Hawkeyes scored 84 points and finished second to Ohio State, which had 102, last Saturday at St Louis.
Iowa had six All-Americans and Cory Clark (133) was the only Hawk to make the finals, losing 11-8.
Thomas Gilman (125) and Brandon Sorenson finished fourth while Bobby Telford came in fifth.
Mike Evans lost two matches in overtime and placed sixth for the third year in a row.
Senior Nathan Burak (197) placed seventh.

Lady Spartans tackle field at early WaMaC East indoor meet

MOUNT VERNON– Coming off the WaMaC East Division meet March 21 at Cornell College, Solon’s girls can point to throws and longer sprints as a couple bright spots heading toward the season’s first outdoor action March 31 at Tipton.
Team scores are not kept during the WaMaC indoor meets; with coaches experimenting with their lineups and some schools in the middle of spring break. But it does provide a peek at the strengths and potential weak spots once the outdoor season begins.

Mehaffey Bridge “Walk And Bike First” event to allow limited pedestrian/bicyclist traffic across March 28

IOWA CITY– As construction moves forward on Mehaffey Bridge, which spans the Iowa River/Coralville Reservoir in unincorporated Johnson County, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors announced a special “Walk and Bike First” event that will allow residents to get a preview of the new bridge at a leisurely pace. Parking will be available at the boat ramp.

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Bend Elementary Parent Teacher Group (PTG) will host the second annual, family-friendly 5K and 1-mile Fun Run on Saturday, April 11.
The 5K will begin at 9:15 a.m., and the 1-mile Fun Run will begin at 10 a.m. Both events will start and end at North Bend Elementary School, 2230 St. Andrews Dr., North Liberty. There will be color stations along both routes.

Finding balance in a kayak

Local kayak fishing enthusiasts cast around for new club members

NORTH LIBERTY– If you think you couldn’t reel in a 25-pound catfish in a kayak, Scott Shrader would prove you wrong.
Shrader, of North Liberty, has always been a fisherman. As a child, he went bass fishing with his father and competed in fishing tournaments as he got older.
He bought a kayak because he also loved paddling around on the water, and a kayak offered something a little different.
“Kayaking a relaxing sport, and you don’t have to deal with the gas and maintenance and expense of having a motor boat,” said Shrader.

Plenty of competition for Clipper boys

CCA take the field for 2015 soccer season

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– In his fifth year leading the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys varsity soccer program, coach Tim Benson (50-20-2-career record) has an enviable problem.
“My concern is making sure we have the right 11 guys on the field as 25-plus guys will be competing every day, not just with our competition, but with each other for playing time.”
The swelled ranks give Benson some depth to work with on the pitch as the Clippers sail into an always competitive WaMaC West Division.
