CCA takes two from Maquoketa, 6-4 and 5-4

Creek Girls outlast Cardinals

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers survived a visit from the Cardinals of Maquoketa Thursday, June 2, winning both halves of a doubleheader, 6-4 and 5-4.
The Cardinals struck first in the top of the opener’s second inning for a 1-0 lead. Courtney James evened the score in the bottom of the third after a line drive put her on base. Karsyn Stratton reached on an error, which allowed James to advance. A series of Cardinal miscues allowed James to keep on truckin’ for home plate.

Ten Trojans named to All-Division Soccer teams

West High is 2016 MVC Valley Div. Champion Team

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Trojans finished the 2016 season with a loss in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state soccer championships, but rose to the top of the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC)’s All-Division selections. The Trojans, under Valley Division Coach of the Year Brad Stiles (and staff) were named the Team Champion, and 10 players earned a First Team, Second Team or Honorable Mention slot.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls and boys varsity soccer teams ended the regular season at the top of the WaMaC West Division. The boys, at 6-1 in conference play, topped the field while the Creek Girls shared the top spot with the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana, also at 6-1. Dyersville Beckman’s boys were tops in the East Division with a 7-0 record. 7-0 was also the showing for the Central DeWitt Lady Sabers.

Clippers bit by the Bobcats

CCA falls, 3-1 and 2-1, to Benton Community

VAN HORNE— Mother Nature and the Benton Community Bobcats gave the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers a pair of rough nights Tuesday and Wednesday, May 31 and June 1, on the Bobcats’ diamond in Van Horne. The Clippers dropped the first half of a doubleheader, 3-1, on Tuesday and had the nightcap rained out, prompting a return the following evening. Unfortunately, even though the weather was far kinder the second time around, Benton Community wasn’t, taking the game, 2-1.

Solon High School basketball All-Star event Sunday, June 12

SOLON– Former college, semi-pro and pro basketball players will converge on the Solon High School gymnasium Sunday, June 12, at 7 p.m. for an All-Star scrimmage to benefit the boys’ basketball team.
Solon varsity head coach Jason Pershing hopes the event will raise funds for his program while providing entertainment for the community.
“The All-Star game brings high-level athletes that our community used to watch on TV into our gymnasium,” Pershing said.

Boys fall to West Liberty in soccer semifinal

SOLON– The Spartans had the lead but couldn’t hang on.
Solon’s varsity boys soccer team saw its season end Wednesday, May 25, after a 3-2 loss to West Liberty in a Class 1A substate semifinal.
The Spartans held a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period on goals by Ben Carr and Brandan Childs, but Solon gave up two unanswered scores in the second period for the difference in the game.
Carr scored his goal at the 16-minute-mark of the first period, knotting the match at 1-1 after an early strike by the Comets.

Solon pounds out 12 runs against Regina

IOWA CITY– A seven-run third inning propelled the Solon varsity baseball team to a 12-4 win over Iowa City Regina Thursday, May 26.
Solon opened the game with two runs in the first inning, a seven-spot in the third and three more runs in the fourth for a 12-0 lead before the Regals managed to muster a score.
Luke Ira and Zach Wegmann each had three RBI for Solon; Ira was 2-4 with two doubles, while Wegmann went 2-5 with two doubles.

Lady Spartans sweep Vinton-Shellsburg

SOLON– Solon’s varsity softball team outscored Vinton-Shellsburg 23-6 in a doubleheader sweep Thursday, May 26, in Solon.
The Lady Spartans opened the double-dip with an 8-1 win behind pitcher McKenna Miller’s one-run, six strike-out performance.
The Vikettes jumped out to an early first-inning 1-0 lead, but Solon came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Spartans plated seven runs over the next four innings. Scoring in each, for the 8-1 final.

SWIM LESSONS AT MT. VERNON POOL:

Registrations are still being accepted (up to a maximum of 64), although a $15 late fee will be assessed. The registration form is available on the Solon Parks and Recreation website or it can be picked up at Solon City Hall. Swim lessons will run the mornings of June 13-17 and 20-24 from 10-10:45 a.m. Swimmers will be picked up, by school bus, at Lakeview Elementary School at 9:40 a.m. and dropped back off, at the elementary school, at approximately 11 a.m.

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans are headed back to the Class 3A State Soccer Tournament in Des Moines. The tournament campaign, which starts for West Thursday, June 2, marks the 16th such trip in 17 years and the first championship quest since 2014 as the team fell short of Des Moines last year.
The Trojans pulled out a 2-1 win over the Bettendorf Bulldogs Saturday, May 28, in Iowa City to punch their tournament tickets.

Central DeWitt Sabers stop Clippers’ state bid

DEWITT– The Sabers of Central Clinton-DeWitt ended the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ state soccer tournament hopes Wednesday, May 25, in a Class 2A Substate Semifinal. The Sabers took the match, 1-0, to end the Creek Boys’ season at 13-5.
The Clippers won their first round match, 3-1, over the North Scott Lancers Monday, May 23, in Tiffin. Trey Godbolt, Blake Nelson and Wyatt Sedlacek scored for CCA with assists by Sam Evans, Erick Martinez and Sedlacek.

Mid-Prairie deals CCA a 4-3 loss

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers opened the 2016 varsity softball season on Tuesday, May 24, at their home diamond with a visit from the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie.
The Clippers held the Hawks scoreless for six innings but a series of mistakes led to a four-run rally in the seventh inning, giving Mid-Prairie the 4-3 win.
