Clipper runners enjoy respite from the heat at Williamsburg

Keith, Douglass lead the way for CCA x-country

WILLIAMSBURG– After blistering heat and smothering humidity, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross country squads opened the 2013 season with an invitational at the athletic complex in Williamsburg. The host Raiders won the girls’ varsity 4K with 36 team points while Vinton-Shellsburg won the boys’ 5K with 58.
The CCA Clipper girls finished seventh overall with 171 points while the boys were fifth with 112. Chloe Keith was the fastest CCA girl with a 16th-place finish in 18:05 and Eric Douglass posted a seventh-place finish in 17:51.

State experience, untested newbies for Trojan x-country team

IOWA CITY– Mike Parker’s Trojan cross country team will rely heavily on a pair of seniors, a quartet of juniors and a sophomore as they look to defend their MVC super meet championship from last season.

West football rolls past Warriors

North Liberty Leader
CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Trojans improved to a 2-0 record Friday, Sept. 6, on the road at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. The Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors were the latest to fall victim to coach Brian Sauser’s crew.
The Warriors scored in the first quarter and led 8-7 before the juggernaut that is West High football kicked into high gear.

Hawk Talk

It was bad enough that Hawkeye fans and players had to deal with high temperatures around 90 degrees and hot sun beating down on Kinnick Stadium, but to lose on a last-second field goal… again?
It was reported that the temperature on the field was 160 degrees!
The last game Iowa played was in November against Nebraska and the wind chill was zero at Kinnick.
It’s not like the Northern Illinois Huskies were a loaf of bread. They only lost one game during the season last fall and that was to the Hawkeyes.

No. 2 Solon sweeps CCA

Season begins with dazzling serves and 3-0 win

SOLON– The No. 2-ranked Solon Lady Spartans defeated Clear Creek Amana (CCA) 3-0 to open the 2013 volleyball season last Thursday.
The Lady Spartans’ serves kept the Clippers off-balance and resulted in a convincing 25-14, 25-8, 25-10 victory.
Solon, which finished second in the Class 4A tournament last year, lost three key players– hitters Kelsey Cave and Kelsey Hinrichs and setter Emma Rickels– to graduation, but it didn’t take long to shake off the rust and reload.

Spartans out of the gates with a win

Solon defeats Mustangs 31-8 on a hot night

MOUNT VERNON– Despite the heat, the Solon Spartans piled up over 400 yards of offense against the Mount Vernon Mustangs Friday night, winning the first game of the season on the road, 31-8.
The game was delayed an hour due to excess heat warnings and the freshman/sophomore game was shortened to 8 minute quarters as a precaution.
“The conditions were very oppressive needless to say,” noted head coach Kevin Miller. “Coaches and trainers work cooperatively to educate players about the importance of hydration, rest and nutrition.”
