No. 2 Solon sweeps CCA

Season begins with dazzling serves and 3-0 win

SOLON– The No. 2-ranked Solon Lady Spartans defeated Clear Creek Amana (CCA) 3-0 to open the 2013 volleyball season last Thursday.
The Lady Spartans’ serves kept the Clippers off-balance and resulted in a convincing 25-14, 25-8, 25-10 victory.
Solon, which finished second in the Class 4A tournament last year, lost three key players– hitters Kelsey Cave and Kelsey Hinrichs and setter Emma Rickels– to graduation, but it didn’t take long to shake off the rust and reload.

Spartans out of the gates with a win

Solon defeats Mustangs 31-8 on a hot night

MOUNT VERNON– Despite the heat, the Solon Spartans piled up over 400 yards of offense against the Mount Vernon Mustangs Friday night, winning the first game of the season on the road, 31-8.
The game was delayed an hour due to excess heat warnings and the freshman/sophomore game was shortened to 8 minute quarters as a precaution.
“The conditions were very oppressive needless to say,” noted head coach Kevin Miller. “Coaches and trainers work cooperatively to educate players about the importance of hydration, rest and nutrition.”

Fun Fall Ball to begin for youth baseball and softball players

NORTH LIBERTY– For the third year, NLYBS will be providing a fun, relaxed baseball/softball experience for kids ages six through 10 (rookies and juniors) who want to try playing for the first time, just love the game and want to continue playing for a few more weeks, or are considering playing up a league next spring.

SOLON– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball coach Brian Bronzynski has a warning for the rest of the WaMaC teams regarding the Solon Spartans.
“I really believe they are potentially a better team than last year.”
The 2012 Spartans had a 35-5-0 record and made it to the state tournament, falling in the Class 4A Championship to Charles City. Last Thursday, Aug. 29, they opened the 2013 campaign by sweeping the Clippers, 3-0.

IOWA CITY– While many have dwelled on the huge hits to the West High varsity football roster from graduation, coach Brian Sauser and his Trojans honestly couldn’t care less.
That was yesterday, and yesterday’s gone.
The 2013 edition of West High Football made a statement Friday, Aug. 30, as it opened the season with a 67-28 home field victory over the Linn-Mar Lions: the program is fine and as strong as ever, maybe even stronger.

Can they break out?
