Hawkeye women get 2nd in big 10

The Iowa women traveled to Indianapolis last week and made it to the finals of the Big Ten Tournament before losing to Nebraska, 72-65.
They knocked off Illinois, Purdue and Ohio State along the way.
The game against Illinois last Thursday was the third time Iowa played the Fighting Illini this season.
They won for the third time, 81-62, but not without some challenges.
Samantha Logic picked up two quick fouls, sat out for a while, came back in, got her third foul and Illinois took a one-point lead, 27-26, with 4:22 left in the first half.

Hawkeye men end regular basketball season

Iowa finished the regular season with a road trip to Michigan State and a home game against Illinois.
What a sad way to end a once-promising season.
Can you believe Iowa was sitting at 8-4, ranked 10th in the nation and some were predicting a possible Final Four?
Then the roof fell in.
The Hawkeyes’ 86-76 loss to the Spartans last Thursday was really frustrating.
Michigan State hosted Illinois on Saturday, March 1, and lost 53-46.
The Spartans scored 50 points against Iowa... IN THE SECOND HALF!
State shot 39 percent from the floor and 33 percent from 3-point range against Illinois.

Hawkeye wrestlers place second

Hawk Talk

University of Iowa senior Tony Ramos won the 133-pound Big Ten title during championship round action of the conference tournament Sunday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Hawkeyes finished second in the team standings with 135 points, trailing only Penn State’s 140.5 points.
Nine Iowa wrestlers finished in the top five of their respective brackets, the most of any school. All nine place winners earned an automatic berth to the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Spartans run at Demon Indoor invite

Indoors, large competitive field, no team scores… Solon’s first meet of the year was a good chance to look at what’s out there for the 2014 season. Nearly 30 schools from 1A to 4A were looking over their early season prospects as well.
“Not a lot of highlights. We’re nursing a few injuries right now,” noted coach Brent Sands, coming out of the Washington (IA) High School’s Demon Invitational, held at the University of Iowa’s indoor track March 4.

Trojans ready for championship three-peat

West runs over City 74-50 for fourth state tourney trip

By Chris Umscheid

CEDAR RAPIDS– It was a good night to be a West High Trojan, especially if your name was Nick Gallagher. The senior was second in scoring with 19 points and second only to teammate Wyatt Lohaus (22 points) as the Trojans ran over rival City High 74-50 Tuesday, March 4, in a substate final at Cedar Rapids Prairie.
“He (Gallagher) probably wasn’t at the top of their scouting sheet,” West coach Steve Bergman said with a laugh after the game.

Clipper girls ready to run

TIFFIN– Jane Astor probably isn’t a fan of Punxsutawney Phil, the infamous groundhog who’s prognostication of a prolonged winter seemed to be coming true.
Astor, the head coach of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls’ track and field team, and her athletes are itching to get out on the track.
After all, it is rather difficult to run the hurdles in UGGs®.

West, CCA boys compete at Demon indoor

West’s 4x800 takes second, Murray fourth in 1600-meter

IOWA CITY– The boys indoor track season opened last Thursday, March 6, with the Demon indoor meet hosted by Washington (Iowa) High School at the University of Iowa’s Recreation Center. The non-points earning exhibition match gave the men a chance to compete while snow still covered the ground.

Time is now to sign up for CCA youth football

TIFFIN– For those who missed the Clear Creek Amana Youth Football Program registration for incoming fifth and sixth grade students for the 2014-2015 school year, there is still an opportunity to sign up by emailing your name and address to Bev at the email below and an application will be mailed to you.

Make or break week

Hawk Talk

Last week was a make or break week for the Hawkeye men’s basketball team.
They had to play three games because the Feb. 18 game at Indiana game was canceled.
They came into the week 19-7, 8-5 in the Big Ten.
Iowa needs to win a couple more to secure a top-four seed in the Big Ten Tournament. That way they won’t have to play four games in four days.
The Hawks traveled to Minnesota for their first game last Tuesday and came home with a 95-89 loss.

Tournament hopes high for women

It was senior night last Thursday and with a lot of help from Iowa’s lone senior, Theairra Taylor, the Hawkeyes took out Ohio State, 65-61.
What a great story and what a great player.
I don’t know how many athletes would come back after three knee surgeries, but Theairra did.
Johanna Solverson came back after two, but three is a major mental challenge.
“Thee” has missed 53 games in her career at Iowa, but hasn’t missed a start in two years.
The 5-11 senor from Minnesota scored 21 points against the Buckeyes and had four of the 15 Iowa steals.

Synergy and Affinity middle school show choirs triumph at Marion invitational

MARION– It was a great night for Solon Middle School show choir Friday night, Feb. 28, at the first-ever Marion Masquerade Show Choir Invitational. Solon Affinity took first place in the Prep Division and Solon Synergy won the Grand Championship, being named top show choir in the nine-team field. In addition, Synergy swept the caption awards– winning Best Vocals, Best Choreography, Best Band, Best Female Soloist (Ellie Hawkins) and Affinity’s Jude Johnson was named Best Male Soloist. This was Synergy’s second Grand Championship of the season.

Bobcats take title from Spartans

Solon sends Benton Community to free throw line 43 times in 72-63 loss

CEDAR RAPIDS– Two statistics say a lot about Solon’s showdown with Benton Community for the District 10 title Feb. 27.
The Spartans were called for 30 fouls, Benton Community 11.
And the Bobcats went to the free throw line 43 times, compared to 12 attempts for Solon.
That 27-6 advantage in points at the charity stripe went a long way in Solon’s 72-63 loss at Cedar Rapids Prairie.
“We just fouled too much,” said head coach Brand Randall.
The defeat not only ended the season for Solon’s boys, but also marked the final game for seven seniors and long-time basketball coach Randall.
