Flashback to 1980 . . . part 2

Hawk Talk

This is the second part of a story about 1980, Hayden Fry’s second season as football coach at the University of Iowa.
I was still living in Moville, Iowa, the place I grew up. I would be moving to North Liberty in December after Christmas.
Ronald Reagan was to become the 40th president of the United States and home computers were just getting started. A gallon of gas went for $1.19 and you could buy a stamp for 15 cents.

Women of Troy again denied a championship

DES MOINES– They stood in a circle, arms around each other, on the sideline for one last time. The trophy they’d just been presented sat alone behind them, an uninvited tag-along. It wasn’t what they came to Des Moines and the Cownie Soccer Park for.
It said, “2014 Soccer State Participant.”
They wanted to bring home one that instead said “2014 Soccer State Champion.”

Trojans make high school soccer history

West picks up third-straight soccer title with 1-0 win over Johnston

North Liberty Leader
DES MOINES– The Iowa City West High Trojans made history Tuesday, June 10, when they became the first team to win three Class 3A state soccer championships in a row.
West High defeated Johnston 1-0 at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines in the final round after having knocked off Valley, West Des Moines 2-0 in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, June 5, and taking down the Warriors of Cedar Rapids Washington in the semifinals on Friday, June 6, 1-0 in the second overtime period.

Clippers baseball breaks even

Team goes 3-3 in a week on the road

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– Brent Henry’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity baseball team put some miles on the bus with a week of road games in Center Point, Manchester and Mount Vernon. The Clippers broke even with three wins and three losses in the trio of doubleheaders.

CCA vs. Center Point-
Urbana
The week started Monday, June 9, with a visit to the Stormin’ Pointers. The Clippers took both ends of the night with 8-6 and 14-6 wins. In game one, 10 innings were needed to settle the score. A 10th-inning two-run double by Cody Wagner sealed the win for CCA.

Old Capitol Chorus brings home first place

DAVENPORT– The Old Capitol Chorus of Iowa City won the Central States District Small Chorus Contest held in Davenport on April 26. They competed against barbershop choruses from their five-state region including Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and South Dakota. This is the chorus’s first district win since 1996 and the first win for the chorus under Director Chad Knipfer.

Baseball Spartans win sixth in a row

Solon sweeps Independence and Center Point-Urbana

SOLON– Make it six in a row for the Solon varsity baseball team.
The Spartans swept home doubleheaders against Independence and Center Point-Urbana last week to move above .500 for the season.
Solon started the year 0-3 with losses to Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Maquoketa, but since then the team has been steadily improving, offensively and defensively.

Solon girls make first-ever tourney appearance

Lady Spartans fall to Regals

DES MOINES– How many times can a teenager say they made history?
For the Solon girls’ soccer team, that’s a resounding “Yes, we can!”
The Lady Spartans traveled to Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines last Thursday for their first-ever appearance at the state tournament, paired up in the first round with Iowa City Regina in the Class 1A bracket.
The two teams had met just weeks earlier at Iowa City, where the Regals prevailed, 2-1.
Unfortunately for Solon fans, the rematch at state ended the same way, with Regina taking a 4-1 win over the Lady Spartans.

Lady Spartans move to No. 2

SOLON– That was a close one.
Emily Ira helped her own cause, singling in Taylor Nearad and pinch-runner Grace McCarty in the fourth inning to give Solon a 2-0 win over No. 12 (4A) West Delaware at Manchester Monday evening.
Ira pitched seven scoreless innings for the win, striking out 14 batters and issuing only one walk while scattering five hits.
It was the 17th win of the season for the undefeated Lady Spartans, who moved up to second place in the Class 4A rankings issued June 13 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Flashback to 1980

Hawk Talk

Hayden Fry was in his second year as head football coach, Lute Olsen had coached the basketball team for seven seasons and Dan Gable was leading the Hawk wrestlers to their third straight national championship in 1980.
Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter to become the 40th president of the United States and Mount St. Helens erupted in Montana, with ash falling like snow on Montana towns.
Home computers were in their infancy, but there were people that predicted in the year 2000, nearly every home would have a computer.

Lady Spartans on to state

Solon girls get rematch with No.3 Iowa City Regina Thursday in Des Moines

SOLON– Monday night, June 9, at the Spartan field, will be remembered for many years to come as the night the Solon girls’ soccer team made history.
The Lady Spartans took on the 10th-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels in a Class 1A Region 6 final, and won 1-0 to advance to the state tournament.
“I was so proud of the effort tonight. We have been working so hard on our game plan, both offensively and defensively,” said head coach John Tucker. “We controlled the ball really well and were able to get some good looks on the goal.”

Offense + defense equals 11-0 start

Emily Ira strikes out 29 in two games as Lady Spartans roll

SOLON– When the offense is sputtering, put Emily Ira on the mound.
Twice in the last week, Coach Jim White’s Lady Spartan softball team was able to preserve an undefeated season by riding strike-out happy Ira’s pitching arm.
Ira struck out 16 batters in a 1-0 victory over Benton Community (No. 4 in Class 3A), and 13 against Highland in a 4-0 win over the weekend.
But in fairness to the rest of the Solon pitching staff and the team’s defense, no one scored an earned run against the Lady Spartans last week.

West girls: fourth appearance in a row at Cownie Park

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy will face Dubuque Hempstead today at 5:30 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A Girls State Soccer Tournament.
West earned the right to compete after knocking off the Muskies of Muscatine 2-0 Monday, June 9, in a regional final on the home pitch.
Heelah Nadler knocked in the first goal seven minutes into the second half for a 1-0 lead, and Emma Cooper put away the insurance goal with just over seven minutes remaining in the match.
