Prime Time basketball is back for its 28th year with the added bonus of University of Northern Iowa (UNI) players on each team.
Former West High Trojans Jeremy Morgan, who played and started for the Panthers last year, and Wyatt Lohaus, who helped lead West High to a state championship last season, play on separate teams this summer.
Jeremy played in all 31 games last year for UNI with 10 starts.
Jeremy was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team after averaging 6 points per game last year.

Lady Spartans dominate Classic

Solon defeats City High, Des Moines Lincoln and Keokuk

SOLON– The Lady Spartans cranked out 17 hits against Iowa City City High pitcher Sasha Frauenholz to notch their 29th win of the season Saturday, June 28, at the 2014 Solon Classic.
Solon defeated City High 11-2, and also picked up wins against Des Moines Lincoln (2-1) and Keokuk (4-1) Friday at the home tournament.
The Lady Spartans trailed 1-0 after the second inning, but scored three times in the third to take the lead.

Spartans men split waterlogged baseball schedule

SOLON– Weather has been shooting holes in the schedule for the Solon varsity baseball team recently.
Over the last two weeks, the Spartans have seen games postponed, relocated and rescheduled.
A doubleheader against Central DeWitt was moved to the University of Iowa’s Duane Banks field June 23, while games against Iowa City Regina were moved to Solon June 26.
Games at Vinton-Shellsburg, originally scheduled for June 19, were moved to June 27, and a June 30 doubleheader with Anamosa in Solon was pushed off a day to July 1 (subsequent to the deadline for this edition).

IOWA CITY– Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans had no trouble dismantling the Waterloo West Wahawks in a varsity doubleheader Monday, June 23, at home, taking the opener 20-1 and the nightcap 11-1 in mercy rule-shortened contests.

CCA softball falls 3-2, 10-0

OXFORD– It’s been a tough cruise for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity softball team this season.
Back-to-back season opening wins were followed by strings of losses including six shut-outs and a pair of losses to Solon. Bright spots have included big wins over Columbus Junction, Davenport West and Williamsburg as well as a pair of wins over Vinton-Shellsburg.
The seas turned rough again Tuesday, June 24, as the Bobcats of Western Dubuque capsized the Clippers in a varsity doubleheader, a make-up of a rain-out the previous week.

TIFFIN– In his second season with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity baseball team, coach Brent Henry has led his team to a 13-11 record thus far, on their way to hopefully surpassing last year’s 13-25 showing. Wins over Vinton-Shellsburg and Iowa City Regina led to the milestone. However, the Bobcats of Western Dubuque torpedoed the Clippers, adding to the loss column.

Hartwig to take over Trojan football

West High names replacement for coach Brian Sauser

IOWA CITY– The Trojans have a new leader.
West High Athletic Director Scott Kibby announced Friday, June 6, that Garrett Hartwig has been appointed head football coach. Hartwig takes over for Brian Sauser, who resigned last month after six years of leading the Trojans on the gridiron. Sauser was the dean of students at West High, but budget cuts eliminated that position. He has since taken an offensive coordinator and assistant athletic director position with Yukon High School in Oklahoma.

8U Clippers are runner-up at state

TIFFIN– The 8U Clipper Blue baseball team took runner-up in the Iowa USSSA state championship in the Hank Aaron Division in Des Moines on June 20 through 22.

Clippers 12U take second at state

ch Class C state championships June 13 through 15. The Clippers started bracket play strong with two wins by mercy ruling on Friday and Saturday (12-1 versus Ankeny Xtreme, 7-1 versus Wilton Beavers Gold). The Clippers struggled against the Jr. J-Hawks on Sunday morning, dropping to the consolation bracket with a 2-4 loss. However, the Clippers fought back through the consolation bracket by winning three games back-to-back on Sunday afternoon (11-3 versus Indianola Gold, 6-3 versus Full Count Blue, 8-4 versus Iowa City West Jaguars Green).

Game time is back for a 14th season of collegiate-level league basketball, and it’s a chance to see to current Hawkeye women as well as the newcomers.
Melissa Dixon was the second pick overall (behind Samantha Logic) and is ready for her senior season.
“It goes really fast and everyone said it would,” said Melissa, who is fifth all-time in program history with 210 career 3-pointers. “I’m excited and it should be a really fun year.”

No. 2 Solon picks up first loss

Lady Spartans run gauntlet of ranked foes

SOLON– In the span of a single week, Solon’s varsity softball team took on five separate ranked opponents.
And out of the eight games the Lady Spartans played, only one team was able to put a blemish on Solon’s perfect record.
Fort Dodge (ranked No. 4 in 4A) defeated Solon 6-5 in a five-inning game Saturday, June 21, in Fort Dodge to provide the first loss of the season for the Lady Spartans.
But by then, Solon had already taken down the second- and seventh-ranked teams in Class 5A– West Des Moines Dowling and Ankeny– as well as unranked Emmetsburg.

Clippers fall to Williamsburg, split with Sabers

TIFFIN — Clear Creek Amana (CCA)’s varsity baseball team improved to 10-7 overall and 7-7 in the WaMaC in the wake of doubleheaders against Williamsburg and Central Clinton-DeWitt. The Clippers dropped a pair Monday, June 16, to the Raiders and split with the Sabers Saturday on June 21.

Lightning delays plagued the night as the Raiders took the opener 4-3 in eight innings and made the sweep with a 5-2 nightcap win.
