No. 2 Solon moving on

Solon defeats Iowa Falls in first round of state tournament

CEDAR RAPIDS– The quest is still alive.
After two straight second-place finishes in 4A, Solon’s Lady Spartans dropped to Class 3A this year and have made it to the semifinals of the state tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids again.
Solon’s volleyball team defeated No. 8 Iowa Falls-Alden, 3-0, in a Class 3A quarterfinal Tuesday, Nov. 11.
After trading runs in the opening set, Solon settled in with aces serves by seniors Jordan Runge and Jordan Smith and closed the game out on a 5-0 run, 25-17.

Spartan football season still a success

MANCHESTER– Even though the season ended for the Solon football team prior to the championship game, there’s no arguing the success of the 2014 campaign.
The Spartans ended the year 9-2 after losing to West Delaware 28-14 in a second round 3A playoff game on a soggy field in Manchester Nov. 3.
Solon had a 14-12 halftime lead but was held scoreless in the second half.
“The second half the field conditions weren’t ideal and I believed it negated some of our speed,” said head coach Kevin Miller.

Made it to state, and into the history books

The ladies earned their first trip to the State Volleyball Tournament since 1999 with a 3-0 sweep of Cedar Rapids Xavier at Iowa Valley High School in Marengo on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Clippers were listing early in the first set, down 1-6, which prompted coach Jackie Clubb to call an early time out.

IC West volleyball falls in first round

Women of Troy end 2014 season with a 28-12 record

But after winning the second set and tying the Class 5A first round match 1-1, West could go no farther in the state volleyball tournament.
The Women of Troy dropped out of the Class 5A tournament with a 3-1 loss to Bettendorf in opening round action Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
West battled tough in the first set, taking advantage of six Bettendorf attack errors before falling, 25-21.

Warriors blitz West to end Trojans’ season

CR Wash 44, West 19 in 4A Quarterfinal

CEDAR RAPIDS– The road to the UNI-Dome and a bid for a state football championship in Class 4A for the Iowa City West High Trojans ended at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids as the Trojans’ nemesis, the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors, rolled over them 44-19 in a quarterfinal round game Friday, Nov. 7.
“This is the one team that can match up with our guys and they certainly did that,” West coach Garrett Hartwig said, noting, “we were just out-matched a little bit, and the credit goes to Wash.” Hartwig said, “(the Warriors) have just so many guys that can get you.”

Hawk Talk

I had a good feeling last week before Iowa hosted Northwestern Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
After Iowa played one of its worst games in a couple of years against Maryland and lost 38-31 two weeks ago, I thought Iowa would bounce back against the Wildcats.
Why?
Kirk Ferentz might not be the best coach ever, but he is a stand-up guy and the players respect him.
Also Iowa has some great leaders, especially the four captains.
You start with All American Brandon Scherff, who led the offensive line to its best day... no sacks and the Hawkeye running backs averaged 4.8 yards per carry.

Hawkeye women think big

The Iowa Hawkeye women won 27 games last year, which tied for the second-most in school history.
The Hawks finished second in the Big Ten Tournament and return four starters, including all-world point guard Samantha Logic.
Iowa led the Big Ten in scoring and assists, plus the Hawks set a school record for scoring offense in 2013-2014, averaging 78.2 points per game.
The Hawkeyes are ranked 19th in the preseason AP top-25 poll.
So when I say there was excitement and optimism at media day last Thursday, you can see why.

Spartans fall to West Delaware after win against Assumption

Rainy Monday gets Solon down

MANCHESTER– Against Davenport Assumption last Wednesday, the big play helped Solon.
At West Delaware Monday night, the big play hurt.
And the second half turned out to be pivotal in both.
The Solon football team fell out of the Class 3A playoffs with a 28-14 loss at Manchester Nov. 3, and concluded the season with a 9-2 record.
The Hawks held the Spartans scoreless in the second half after Solon had taken a 14-12 lead into halftime.
