CCA’s young man from Moldova

Exchange program in spotlight

TIFFIN– The Republic of Moldova, was founded on Aug. 27, 1991, after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. The small country, squeezed between Ukraine to the north, east and south, and Romania to the west has a population of just over 3.5 million.
Moldova is also home to Dan Zalucean, an exchange student attending Clear Creek Amana (CCA) high school this year. The 17-year old is a senior and is part of a U.S. State Department initiative to improve relations with former Soviet countries.

Lady Spartans too much for CCA to handle

SOLON– Josie Durr opened last Thursday’s varsity game between the Solon Lady Spartans and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers with a 3-point shot, and went on to lead Solon with 21 points in a 65-49 win.
The Clippers were coming off a 63-40 win Tuesday night on the road at Benton Community while Solon was regrouping from a 43-37 loss at Mount Vernon. However, the Creek Girls quickly found themselves in a hole they spent the rest of the game trying to dig out from.

Half the team with a chance at state

Seven Spartan wrestlers advance to district meet Saturday at Marion

MOUNT VERNON– Seven Solon wrestlers have advanced to compete at the district meet Saturday at Marion, the last step toward a berth at state.
Solon’s varsity wrestling program placed third at the sectional meet held Saturday, Feb. 8, at Mount Vernon, with a score of 218 points, just off the pace set by sectional champ Mount Vernon (242) and second place Williamsburg (227).
But more importantly, seeding was decided for the sectional meet, with the champion and runner-up advancing to the district tournament.

Spartans fall to Mustangs on the road

MOUNT VERNON– It was one of those games.
The Solon boys fell to the Mount Vernon Mustangs on the road Tuesday night (Feb. 4), 69-55.
“They (Mount Vernon) played well, and it was just kind of a buzz saw,” said Solon head coach Brad Randall. “It just wasn’t one of our best defensive games.”
The Spartans trailed by only five points at halftime, but every time the Spartans made a run, Mount Vernon’s Andy Decamp seemed to be there to match it. “He just shot the ball so well,” Randall said. “Even when we defended him well.” Decamp finished the game with 22 points on 8-12 from the field.

Another Friday, another blowout

West Trojans dominate East

IOWA CITY– One week after blowing out Cedar Rapids Prairie in a continuous clock-shortened game the West High Trojans rolled over their counterparts from Waterloo East, 73-34, Friday, Feb. 7, at home. It was the second pummeling of East delivered by West this season; the teams met in Waterloo in January with Bergman’s Boys winning 83-40.

New kids on the block

Hawk Talk

It’s time to take a little break from basketball and wrestling as the Hawkeye football team signed 19 players last week. They plan to add a junior college defensive end this summer.
I always enjoy checking out the new recruits, whether it’s football, basketball or wrestling… the three sports I cover.
I always wonder who will be the next Shonn Greene, the next Aaron White or the next Bethany Doolittle.
All three we not highly recruited.
It also gives me a chance to talk to Reese Morgan, who is in his second year of coaching the defensive line.

UPSETS

I was going to concentrate on Iowa’s new football recruits this week but I have to give some love to the Hawkeye women’s and men’s basketball teams.
The Hawkeye women traveled to ninth-ranked Penn State and upset the Lady Lions, 73-70, last Thursday .
That’s the first time Iowa has beaten a top-10 team on the road since 1993.
The Hawks lost to Penn State 87-71 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena back on Jan. 5, and I have to admit I didn’t think Iowa had much of a chance.

Road win and home loss

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye women had a road trip to Minnesota and hosted Nebraska last week.
They knocked off the Gophers, 64-56, Wednesday and lost to Nebraska 80-76 Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa played Lisa Bluder ball against the Gophers.
That is, four players in double figures, solid defense and 17 assists on 24 baskets.
“Such a great team performance,” said coach Bluder. “I love the balance of our basketball team.”
That’s the 20th straight game Iowa has had at least three players finish in double figures.
How much more can you say about Samantha Logic?
