Spartans lose first of the year against Sabers

DeWitt explodes for 25 points in fateful fourth quarter

DeWITT– It was the first basketball loss of the year for Solon’s varsity boys Tuesday, as Central DeWitt scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Spartans, 61-52.
“Both teams played well,” said head coach Brad Randall. “They played better in the fourth quarter.”
Solon built a 11-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Sabers whittled it away slightly in the second. The Spartans held a four-point lead at the half, 26-22.
Central DeWitt tied the game at 36-36 to end the third period and then went on a 25-16 scoring splurge in the fourth to pull away.

The Iowa Hawkeye men’s team won a blowout at home and lost a heartbreaker at Iowa State last week.
The first game was a 92-59 big win against Fairleigh Dickenson.
You start out with five players in double-figures, the Iowa bench outscoring the starters and the Hawks controlling the boards, 54-32.
Melsahn Basabe, Jarrod Uthoff and Gabe Olaseni had double-doubles.
Mel had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Jarrod had 10 and 10, while Gabe totaled 14 points and 10 boards.

Hawk women fall to Iowa State

It was too many turnovers, too many missed layups and too much home cooking as the Cyclones knocked off the Hawkeyes Thursday at Hilton Coliseum, 83-70.
Eighteen turnovers, including 13 in the first half, plus Samantha Logic getting an elbow in the forehead which started bleeding and took her out with less than seven minutes left in the first half.
Iowa State was leading 24-13 at the time and increased that to 41-28 at half.
Samantha came back and played the whole second half and led the Hawks with 18 points and seven rebounds.

SHUTDOWN

UI wrestlers blank Buffalo 46-0

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

The Hawkeye wrestlers took every match last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Buffalo, winning 46-0. That included two pins, six majors and two technical falls.
“That’s how it should be,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “It doesn’t matter who the opponent is. You may not get a shutout every time, but you strive for it. We still have weights where we have to be ready to go the entire match.”
That should be a good warm-up for top-ranked Penn State this Saturday at Carver.

Overtime

Spartans overcome double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter against Mid-Prairie

SOLON– It was an instant classic.
After several seasons where the Mid-Prairie/Solon doubleheader has been tipped to Solon’s advantage, the Golden Hawks gave the Spartans all they could handle Saturday.
Solon escaped with a 63-62 overtime win, but only after overcoming a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter.
“It was an exciting game,” said head coach Brad Randall. “It was good to come away with a win.”

Lady Spartans pick apart Mid-Prairie

Defense, 18 steals lead to second win of the season

SOLON– Defense was the key.
The Lady Spartans picked up their second win of the season over the weekend with a 50-37 victory over Mid-Prairie, part of a girls/boys doubleheader Saturday in Solon.
The Lady Spartans turned up the heat on Mid-Prairie, coming away with 18 steals and some transition opportunities.
“Our game plan against Mid-Prairie was to pressure their guards,” said Solon head coach Tony Nicol. “I thought Rylee Smith did a tremendous job of frustrating Mid Prairie’s point guard.”

Wrestlers take fourth place at Oelwein tournament

OELWEIN– Solon’s Trevor Nelson remained undefeated and captured his first tournament championship (152 pounds) as the Spartan wrestling crew placed fourth at the 10-team Oelwein Invitational Saturday.
Crestwood took the team title with 278 points, but the Spartans grabbed a solid fourth place behind host Oelwein with a score of 147 and two champions. Logan Linderbaum also placed first in the tournament at 285 pounds.
Louis Gnida (120) and Cole Fritz (138) took home second place, while Trevor Yahr (126) and Nick Bailey (170) captured fourth place finishes.

The win, the 56th consecutive victory for the Trojans, put the squad at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mississippi Division of the MVC while it handed Washington its first loss of the season for a 3-1 record.

Iowa’s shotgun deer season preview

By Joe Wilkinson
Iowa Department of Natural Resources
DES MOINES– Iowa deer hunters likely stepped out into single-digit cold Saturday, the opener for the first shotgun season. That’s closer to typical weather than the balmy 30s and 40s the previous weekend. What better way to kick off the 60th anniversary of Iowa’s deer season, than by stocking up on hand warmers?

Women Go 2-0

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund

Iowa’s women won two games last week and now have won six in a row.
The Hawkeyes picked up a big 97-91 win over 22nd-ranked Syracuse Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
When I take pictures at Iowa games I usually sit under the basket that the Hawks will be shooting at in the first half.
That is also closest to the visitors’ bench.
When I saw the Syracuse players lined up at their bench I noticed a lot of size, length and depth.
They played 10 players and were 8-0 coming into Carver.

Hawkeye men with big win over Irish

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

The Hawkeye men are 9-1.
They opened with a big 98-93 win over Notre Dame last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A really good back-and-forth game with the Hawks holding on.
Great shooting from the floor (57 percent), from 3-point range (54 percent) and from the free throw line, where the Hawkeyes were 25-28.
How about Iowa’s bench and the crowd?
The Fighting Irish had a seven-man rotation and Iowa went 10 deep.
In the first half, the Hawks had nine players score… none of them in double-figures.
