2014 Optimist Fishing Derby

The Solon Optimist Fishing Derby was held July 19 during Beef Days with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. at Brosh’s Pond. The event was emceed and run by Doug Thompson. Terry Krob performed the paperwork of registering the entrants and tallying the fish they caught. President Chris Mottinger, member Tony Ulch and nonmember Matt Blinks measured and relayed the catch information to Terry. Marv Stastny assisted and took pictures. Joanne Ulch did the advertising, and got the fishing poles and worms. Denny Gruber caught and stocked the pond with some good-sized catfish. However, none of them were caught during the event; (there are still some big ones in there). Prize money was awarded for the first fish caught by Garret Martin, and the last fish caught by Jack Leick. The remainder of the money was awarded to the six contestants: Largest Bluegill: First place, Nick Cass; second, Jack Leick; third, Miles Mendiola; fourth, Mason Mendiola and Sylvia Havlicek; sixth, Landen Bransky.
A big thank you to Sam’s Main Street Market for the worms, Paul Sleeper for the use of the fishing poles and to Matt Linn and Connie Goldsmith at Brosh Chapel & AvaCentre for the use of the facility. Your support of this activity is greatly appreciated by the youth of Solon.
