2018 Iowa City West High softball preview
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Call it a homecoming. Or to be more accurate, a second homecoming, as Barb Lynn returns to the Iowa City West High softball diamond to lead the varsity Women of Troy.
Lynn, a 1993 West High grad, first took over the West High program in 2013 after Jeff Kelley’s resignation at the end of the 2012 season. Kelley returned to coaching last year and now leads the Liberty High varsity softball program. Lynn, currently a math teacher at Liberty High, spent one year with the Women of Troy with a 22-20 record before leaving and assuming the top spot at Clear Creek Amana. Lynn was with the Clippers for three seasons and took the Creek Girls to the state tournament in Fort Dodge in 2014 where they went 0-3 for eighth place. Overall, Lynn had a 63-59 record with the Clippers.
Following the resignation of Justin Lutjen at the conclusion of the 2017 season, West High Athletic Director Craig Huegel recommended Lynn to the school board for the position last September.
“The West High diamond is ‘home,’” Lynn said. “To be able to be head softball coach in the same program I played for is very special.”
The Women of Troy finished 2017 with a 25-16 record after a disappointing 0-5 start. The team had a 10-game winning streak with doubleheader sweeps against Cedar Rapids Washington, Waterloo East and Dubuque Wahlert. A loss to Burlington in Solon’s tournament was followed by a seven-game win streak broken by Jefferson.
The season ended on the road as Davenport West shredded the Women of Troy 13-1 in a Class 5A regional semifinal.
Lynn inherits a program that lost seven varsity starters from last year’s squad to graduation or Liberty High. Four starters return led by seniors Brooke Goodman and Kylie Heisdorffer. Goodman is a shortstop who put up a .330 batting average and earned an All Conference Honorable Mention last season while Heisdorffer is a pitcher with a 13-8 record last year. She hit with a 2.15 batting average and also earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention. Eva Burbidge, a sophomore, is back after starting in right field last year along with freshman Cynthia Hull. Burbidge will spend some time in the circle as a pitcher this year. Hull was a designated hitter last season with a .333 batting average with eight doubles, one triple and four home runs. Her efforts netted her an All Conference Second Team honor.
Also back are seniors Abigail Arens and Kyra Stoll, junior Jaclyn Bakken and sophomores Kiahna Hill and Grace Schneider. Hill had a .381 batting average last year,
New to the lineup is Ryleigh Mulcahey, a junior outfielder and pitcher.
Overall, Coach Lynn sees lots of opportunities for her team this season. “Looking forward to seeing significant growth over the course of the season as we gain valuable experience,” she said. As usual the Mississippi Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference is tough, with many strong teams in the area, she noted.
Dawn Cooksley is Lynn’s varsity assistant, Skylar Hop (another West alumni) is the junior varsity coach and a varsity assistant while Dani Carter is a volunteer varsity assistant. Tristan Sievers will coach the 9/10 program.
The season starts Tuesday, May 22, at home against Dubuque Hempstead in a doubleheader set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
