2018 West boys varsity soccer preview

Young Trojans need to develop quickly
IOWA CITY– Last year, the Iowa City West High Trojans entered the Class 3A state soccer championships as the eighth-seeded (last) team and emerged as the state champions after a dramatic run at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. The Trojans knocked off No.1-seeded Cedar Rapids Prairie in a shootout for a 6-5 finish and 2-1 final score in the quarterfinal round, then took out fourth-seeded Bettendorf, 4-1, before defeating No. 2-seed West Des Moines Valley, 1-0, for the championship. West finished the season 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the Mississippi Valley Conference. The championship was West’s ninth, and first since 2014. The Trojans won in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and were the runner-up in 2004, 2007 and 2008. Defending the title of state champion could prove challenging for the 2018 edition of the Trojans. Brad Stiles, in his 18th year as the head coach (312-60-3 career record), lost some key weapons in his arsenal due to graduation. Gone is Alex Andersen, who put in 21 goals and made 11 assists last year. Andersen was named captain of the 2017 Class 3A All-Tournament Team. Also graduated are Zach Frisbie, the keeper who allowed only 18 goals while making 78 regular season saves, and Sam Choi, a forward who scored 16 goals and made two assists. Adam Rose, Conor Zielinski and Nick Raley also have moved on along with Will Peterson and Zach Logsden. Senior Harry Zielinski, a defender and midfielder who made a game-winning assist in last year’s final, could play multiple positions for the Trojans. “We will build around him as needed,” Stiles noted. Stiles’ other returning senior starter is Patrick Shirazi, a wide midfielder who Stiles said is very good at what he does. Shirazi had several assists last year. Junior Coleson Krup is back as a returning starter as a midfielder. “(He) played well when the team had injury concerns and is now ready to be a full time starter,” Stiles said. Also back as a starter is sophomore Brody Schilling, a defender and midfielder. “(He) also can play anywhere on the field and may need to this season,” Siles said. “(He) scored two goals in our playoff run.” Two seniors, a junior and a sophomore also round out the returning letter winners. Mike Schilling (wide midfielder) and Anthony Shirazi (center defender) are back with junior Joey Keuhn (center defender) and sophomore Micah Frisbie (forward/midfielder). New to the varsity squad are juniors Gada Ambo (forward), Zach Albright (keeper) and Josh Jasek (defender/midfield) and sophomores Tomas Sanchez (defender/midfield) and Jacob Nyberg (defender). Alex Bode and Bernard Gamamou will assist Stiles this year. Bode has been with the Trojans since 2014, while Gamamou is in his first season at West High. “I am looking forward to growing with this young group. We will learn from our mistakes and try to peak at the right time. Each player has lots to contribute and we have lots of roles to replace,” Stiles said. “We started last season with at least 28 players of varsity experience. This season we will begin with 14 total. We will need to rely on our junior keeper and our ability to maintain possession to stay in games.” The season opened Thursday, March 29, with a jamboree on Mount Mercy University’s field ahead of a two-day classic (tournament) at home. The first home match of the regular season is set for Tuesday, April 10, at 6:45 p.m. against Linn-Mar.
