Accident kills Williamsburg teen
JOHNSON COUNTY– A three-car accident on Interstate 80 resulted in the death of a 14-year-old Williamsburg girl last Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Also involved in the accident was Dan M. Earhart, 59, of Solon.
According to a report released by the Iowa State Patrol, Earhart was driving a Silverado pickup eastbound on I-80 at approximately 4:36 p.m., followed by a Chevrolet van driven by Karen Dye, 52, of Williamsburg, and another Silverado pickup driven by 42-year-old Jorge Ortiz of Washington, Iowa. The three vehicles in succession passed a Johnson County Sheriff deputy’s vehicle, which was stopped along the left shoulder with emergency flashers to warn motorists of a traffic accident ahead. Earhart and Dye slowed and stopped, but Ortiz’s vehicle did not reduce speed, and struck Dye’s van in the rear, pushing it into Earhart’s pickup ahead.
In the van was Melissa Street, 14, of Williamsburg, who was transported by Aircare to University of Iowa Hospitals but died as a result of her injuries.
Earhart was reportedly not injured, while Ortiz, Dye and a passenger in Dye’s vehicle, 18-year-old Michael Street of Williamsburg, were transported by Johnson County Ambulance to University Hospitals. No further information about their conditions was available.
All of the people involved in the accident were reported to have been wearing seatbelts during the collision.
