Action heats up on the diamond
IOWA CITY– Two out of three ain’t bad.
That’s how the West High Trojans did in three games at home in a double-header with Cedar Rapids Prairie and a single with the Regals of Iowa City Regina. West split with the Prairie Hawks Monday evening (June 10) before a win over the Regals on Tuesday (June 11).
A six-run rampage by Prairie sealed the 8-4 loss in the opener Monday evening in a game that saw Tanner Wilson hit a double. Ezra Reiners had three hits; Declan Doyle and Colin Baker both had two hits. Sam Scott worked six innings on the mound striking-out six.
For Prairie: 8 runs, 6 hits, 6 left on base.
For West: 4 runs, 10 hits, 4 left on base.
The nightcap took eight innings to settle as the Trojans emerged with a 12-11 win. Nate Boland, Baker and Reiners all had homers with Reiners also knocking-out a double. West three, three-run innings on their way to an 11-11 tie. A Trojan run in the bottom of the eighth bought the win. Sam Searls spent four innings on the mound giving up a dozen hits and eight earned runs. He walked one and struck-out five.
For Prairie: 11 runs, 12 hits, 6 left on base.
For West: 12 runs, 12 hits, 4 left on base.
Tuesday, Regina came calling in a non-conference match-up. The Regals were ranked No. 5 in Class 2A while the Trojans were No. 2 in 4A. Regina struck first with a run in the top of the third but a Tyus Adkins solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth tied the game 1-1. Reid Bonner hit a solo homer in the fifth for the 2-1 lead and Declan Doyle extended the lead by scoring after getting on base with a single, stealing second and advancing to third on an Adkins single. A Bonner RBI single scored Tanner Wilson in the sixth for the 4-1 win. Nick Spiess worked all seven innings giving up only one earned run and striking-out three. The win improved West’s record to 12-3 while dropping Regina to 8-4.
For Regina: 1 run, 6 hits, 4 left on base.
For West: 4 runs, 7 hits, 8 left on base.
The Trojans will face Muscatine in a JV/Varsity contest Wednesday, June 19, at home before heading for Cedar Rapids and a Varsity double-header Friday, June 21, against Jefferson and a double-dip with Cedar Rapids Washington on Monday, June 24.
