Another win for the Bolts

Liberty High boys zap CR Kennedy Cougars, 54-34

IOWA CITY– The debut season for the Liberty High School “Lightning Bolts” continued to go well as the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars (Green squad) joined the ranks of those zapped by the Lightning Thursday, Jan. 19, in a freshman game at Iowa City West High.
The Bolts, coached by Stan Hughes, built an 8-3 lead off baskets by Isaac Bender, Andre Brandon and Corey Baldwin and led 19-6 at the end of the first period. Dawson Zimmerman, Ben Houselog and Samuel Nicklaus contributed points in the quarter as well. Cayden Duhaime delivered a buzzer-beating three-point basket to end the first half. Duhaime’s shot made it 31-15 for the Bolts.
Liberty continued to build its lead in the third period as Brandon and Bender poured in the points to go ahead 42-26 heading into the final seven minutes. Ryan Nugent added a two-point basket in the fourth period as the Bolts cruised to the win.
Brandon led the Bolts with an unofficial 15 points with 13 from Bender and 10 from Nicklaus.
The Bolts and the Liberty Lightning Athletic Booster Club are holding a “Pack the Gym” and Winter Pep Rally Saturday, Jan. 28, at North Central Junior High as the Bolts take on Dubuque Wahlert starting at 10 a.m. Liberty returns to Iowa City West High’s little gym on Monday, Jan. 30. as Cedar Rapids Xavier visits with an 8 p.m. start. The Bolts finish the season at home (West High) with Prairie visiting on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 6:15 p.m. and Bettendorf comes to town for the final game on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 9 a.m.
