Banner year for Solon Middle School show choirs
SOLON– Congratulations to the Solon Middle School show choirs on a successful competition season.
Synergy, Solon Middle School’s (SMS) auditioned show choir, competed at six show choir invitationals around the state of Iowa, competing with middle schools from Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska. Synergy finished the season undefeated in Class 3A, and won overall open-class middle school grand championships at Dallas Center-Grimes, Marion and West Delaware. Synergy was the overall first runner-up at Cedar Rapids Xavier, and second runner-up at Johnston and Pella. Synergy’s show, “Taking Flight,” captured awards for Best Vocals (three times), Best Choreography (twice), Best Band, Best Show Design, People’s Choice Award, and Most Entertaining Show. Ellie Hawkins was named Best Female Soloist at Johnston and Marion. Matt Shafer received the Outstanding Performer award at Pella, and Hawkins, Shafer, Sophie Nicol, and Nate Tucker received Outstanding Soloist awards at West Delaware.
Affinity, Solon Middle School’s non-auditioned show choir, attended four competitions, and finished as the top-scoring prep group at three of four events. They were crowned middle school Prep Champions at Marion, and Jude Johnson was named Best Male Soloist. Cece McSweeney received the Outstanding Performer award at Pella, and Emalyn Foster and Marisa Radenbaugh were named Outstanding Soloists at West Delaware.
Solon Middle School’s show choir program is under the direction of SMS Vocal Music Director Brandon Fraseur. Their choreographers are Lovar Davis Kidd and Jessica Frerich, and the teams are accompanied by Sarah Olsem. Over 100 students participate in show choir at Solon Middle School, making it one of the school district’s largest and most popular extra-curricular activities.
