The Barkers again lead the way for CCA XC

Brandon Barker wins, Haidyn Barker third in Kennedy High’s Eastern Iowa XC Classic
Conner Bonde, Logan Kafer, Fred Schultz, Christian Withrow and Michael Potter lead a pack of runners in the JV boys race Thursday, Sept. 24, during Cedar Rapids Kennedy High’s Eastern Iowa Cross Country Classic at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids. Withrow led the Creek Boys with a fourth-place finish while Schultz was seventh.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) cross country squads ran in Cedar Rapids Kennedy High’s 2020 Eastern Iowa Cross Country Classic on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids, giving the Clippers a shot at competing with metro-area Class 4A squads.
CCA’s varsity boys took the runner-up spot with senior Brandon Barker winning the event in 16:33.48 after maintaining a lead throughout the race. Gavin Zillyette, a junior, finished fourth in 17:15.91. The host Cougars took the team title with 37 team points to the Creek Boys’ 52.
The varsity girls race saw CCA’s varsity and junior varsity (JV) squads combine for third place led by sophomore Haidyn Barker’s third-place finish in 20:23.91. Kayla Jiras, a senior, was 10th in 22:00.19. The Cougars won the team title with 41 points followed by Iowa City Regina Catholic (70) and the Creek Girls (80 team points).
CCA’s JV boys were a very close second to the team champion Cougars (44-46) with senior Christian Withrow leading the Creek Boys with a fourth-place finish in 19:15.60. Freshman Fred Schultz was seventh in 19:36.87 with freshman Jack Hagen placing 10th in 19:45.26.
Coach Ben Robison called it a very good night for the Clippers overall. “Varsity girls were third without running our No. 4 girl. Varsity boys were second, and beat up on some 4A squads. Brandon Barker has established himself as one of Eastern Iowa's elites; I cannot wait to see how he stacks up against the 3A kids. Both our boys and girls squads are really coming into their own... right on schedule. I'm excited to see what the rest of the competitive phase and the championship phase have for us!”
After hosting their own invitational at the Iowa City Kickers Soccer Park on Monday, Sept. 28, the Clippers return to Kickers on Thursday, Oct. 1, for Iowa City High’s invitational.
