Berner upends Phillips in Tiffin
TIFFIN— The 2011 Tiffin city council election brought out 324 people, or 26.78 percent, of the 1,210 eligible voters. However, those who did vote handed Steve Berner a decisive win over incumbent Royce W. Phillips in the mayoral race. Berner received 195 votes (61 percent) to Phillips’ 127 (39 percent). Phillips has been Mayor of Tiffin since January 2008.
In the city council election, four candidates vied for two seats. Councilman Mark Peterson was evicted from the seat he had held for two terms. Michael C. Ryan and Peggy Upton both won with 187 (60 percent) and 162 (52 percent) votes respectively. Peterson received 147 votes (47 percent) while candidate Jim Schmidt picked up 66 votes (21 percent).
Tiffin’s voter turnout was higher than other Johnson County communities such as Iowa City (14.81 percent), Coralville (14.34 percent) and North Liberty (7.92 percent).
