Bids for 120th St. project likely to be let in September

SHUEYVILLE– The long-discussed 120th Street reconstruction project continues to move forward, but don’t look for any major work in the a future.
Johnson County Secondary Roads Department Director Greg Parker said the county has completed its review of the preliminary plans being prepared for construction. He anticipated receiving the final construction plans by the middle of the month for final review.
“Unless any major hitches take place, we are currently planning for a September letting timeframe” Parker said.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with Coralville-based Veenstra & Kimm, a civil engineering firm, for engineering design and construction management last November. The firm has worked with the city of Shueyville for several years in an effort to develop a proposal to rebuild the narrow, crumbling roadway. The Board also approved bonding the $2.2 million project with an agreement that the City of Shueyville will repay the county over time.
An earlier timeline would have had this be the summer of discontent with major construction in-progress and a December substantial completion date. Now, it is hoped some work can still occur this year with the bulk of the activity taking place through 2012.
“At this time, we have not determined what, if any, work can be accomplished this fall.” Parker said.  “I know we will not remove any mainline paving until next year, because we do not want that left open over the winter.”
The project consists of two portions: a rural section, and an urban section. The rural section extends from roughly 500 feet east of the Interstate 380 northbound off ramp to the west side of James Street. This portion will be 24 feet wide with 6-foot shoulders (5 feet paved, 1 foot gravel). The urban section runs from the west side of James Street to approximately 150 feet east of the Curtis Bridge Road intersection, and will be 31 feet wide with full curb and gutter.
