Bolts get a pair of hat tricks against Chiefs

Liberty boys defeat Keokuk, 9-3

KEOKUK– Liberty High’s varsity boys soccer team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 9-3 shelling of the winless Keokuk Chiefs Monday, April 23, in Keokuk.
Mohemed Yougue launched the Bolts’ first strike in the third minute with an assist from Ayi Ajavon, and scored again in the 49th (Cole Accola assist) and 53rd (Ajavon assist) minutes for the hat trick. Ajavon also made a hat trick with three consecutive goals in the fifth (Jacob Mascardo assist), 31st (Yougue assist) and 41st minutes (Yougue assist). Jordan Barry struck in the 51st minute with an assist from Kolby Godbolt, who scored in the 72nd minute with an assist from Ajavon. Luke Nichols fired the final shot in the 75th minute with an assist from Barry.
The win was Liberty’s second consecutive, after a season opening 5-1 victory over Anamosa followed by a 8-2 loss to Solon and a 5-1 defeat (Ajavon goal) at the hands of North Scott.
The Bolts defeated West Liberty, 5-4 in a shootout April 19, with Cole Accola scoring in the 14th minute with an assist from Ajavon, Godbolt scored in the 31st and 61st minutes with Ajavon assists, and Ajavon found the back of the net in the 70th minute with an assist from Yougue. The match ended in a 4-4 tie, knotted up through two overtime periods resulting in a shootout. Ajavon, Barry, Godbolt, Mascardo and Nathan Wankana Basanga scored in the shootout.
The Bolts travel to Davenport North High School on Friday, May 4, for a 4:30 p.m. match and visit Muscatine on Monday, May 7. Liberty High competes in Independence High School’s tournament on Saturday, May 12, starting at 10 a.m. and face the combined Cedar Valley Christian/Alburnett High School squad at home, the Coralville Youth Sports Complex located at 2480 Dempster Dr., at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 14. The regular season comes to a close Friday, May 18, with a girl-boy varsity doubleheader against Clear Creek Amana, in Tiffin. The boys take the field around 7 p.m., following the girls’ match.
