Bolts light up the Demons

Liberty boys open the season with 74-50 win in Washington

WASHINGTON– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 74-50 non-conference win over the Washington Demons Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Washington.
The Lightning jumped out to a 29-10 lead at the end of the first period and held a commanding lead, 43-23, at halftime. The Bolts continued the onslaught in the second half with a 62-32 advantage going into the final quarter.
Junior Ira Hazeltine led Liberty with 21 points including six three-pointers. Senior Andre Brandon put in 14 points with a dozen from junior Kelby Telander.
Washington dropped to 1-1 after defeating Centerville, 89-51, on Monday, Dec. 2.
The Bolts travel to Waterloo East High School on Friday, Dec. 13, with the sophomores taking the floor at 6 p.m., and the varsity tip-off is set for around 7:30 p.m. Liberty returns home on Tuesday, Dec. 17, as Western Dubuque, Epworth visits. The sophomores play at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m. The sophomores play a men’s/women’s doubleheader at Iowa City High on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. with a varsity doubleheader set for Friday, Dec. 20, at home. Coach Stu Ordman’s boys take the floor at 7:30 p.m. after the 6 p.m. varsity girls’ game.
The Liberty sophomores defeated Washington, 43-31, with eight points from Griffin Kraft, seven from Owen Swartzendruber, and Savion Taylor added six points courtesy of a pair of three-point goals.
