DES MOINES– Freshman Jack Stevens (113 pounds) accomplished something many high school wrestlers only dream about: competing in the state tournament. Stevens qualified with a second-place finish in the Class 3A District 7 state qualifying meet on Saturday, Feb. 13, and became only the second freshman in CCA history to do so. Stevens was the only Clipper to advance to state this year.
Stevens’ first round match on Thursday, Feb. 18, against Fort Dodge’s Max Bishop ended in a loss by technical fall (16-0). The Predicament had Bishop No. 5 in 3A in the Feb. 10 rankings.
JJ Maihan, of Ankeny, took a 9-5 decision from Stevens in the first round of wrestle backs, ending his tournament appearance. Stevens finished the season with a 19-6 record.
