TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ track and field team finished the 2012 season in 11th place in the WaMaC out of 15 teams. But, having six state meet qualifiers on the 2013 roster, and the conference indoor champion in the long jump gives the Clipper crew hope for a better showing.
Senior Josh Martinac picked up that conference indoor title recently with a 19’-4-1/2” effort. Martinac will also run in the 200, 400 and 800-meter events. Jared Ganschow, Tony Pederson, Aaron Campbell, Jake Swenka, Kam Kahler and Beau Gerard are all seniors and returning letter winners bringing leadership and experience to the team. Ganschow, Pederson and Campbell are state qualifiers and will handle the 200, 400, relay, 800 and hurdle events. Swenka will run the 400, 800 and relays while Kahler will take flight in the long jump. Kahler will also tackle the 100 and 200 as well as relay squad duties while Gerard returns to his role as a thrower of the shot put and discus. Zach Smith is a newcomer to the team, and also a senior. Smith will join Gerard as a thrower.
Juniors Jon Nzombo, Jack Murray, Tyler Kasper and Eli Lee are back with Nzombo running the 100, 200, 400 and relays. Nzombo also was a state qualifier last year. Murray is a distance man, tackling the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter runs. Murray was also a state qualifier. Kasper will work the 200, 400, hurdles and relays along with Lee.
Four sophomores, Tanner Bandy, Austin Smith, Trevor Toy and Mitch Stopko are back as well. Bandy was a 2012 state qualifier and will work the high jump as well as 200, 400 and relay events. Smith is another distance man, Toy will do the 100, 200, hurdles and relays while Stopko will mark-up for 100, 200, 400 and relay events.
Sophomore Sebastian Calderon joins the team for 100, 200 and 400-meter events and freshman Eric Douglas is on-board for the 800 and 1,600-meter runs.
“Our strength will continue to be our sprinting crew,” coach Tony Brack said. Brack is in his eighth year at the helm of the Clipper track and field program. “Our distance crew led by Jack Murray will be a driving force,” he said, adding “(the Clippers) look forward to sending as many of our athletes to the Drake Relays and state meet as possible.”
