TIFFIN– It’s been a tough season for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers boys’ varsity basketball team with only four wins and (at this writing) nine losses, two of them back-to-back and by 20 points each.
After losing 71-50 to Benton Community on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Steve Ottoson’s Clippers came home for a Friday night tilt with Maquoketa, and found themselves in trouble early before losing, 57-37. The Cardinals improved to 5-9 with the win.
CCA was down 8-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the first period when Mitch Stopko finally got the Clippers on the scoreboard with a lay-up. Stopko, who was averaging just over five points per game, was held to two. A Keyan McAreavy free throw made it a 12-3 game after the first period as the Cardinals scored at the buzzer.
Jake Neubauer gave the Clippers a spark of hope in the second period as he sank a badly needed 3-pointer and followed it with a field goal. Neubauer had a pair of 3-bombs and led CCA with eight points. The Clippers still trailed by 10 points at the half, down 25-15.
McAreavy opened up for the Clippers in the third by scoring off a steal, Neubauer hit his second 3-pointer, Cody Wagner put up two points and Noah Whittinghill brought the Clipper fans to their feet as the period ended when he drove down the court and scored on a lay-up. CCA still trailed, 38-24.
Aaron Akers went 2-2 at the charity stripe and hit a 3-pointer late in the final eight minutes to make it 53-32 while Matthew Suther nailed a field goal in the final minute.
The Clippers are home Friday, Jan. 31, as the Williamsburg Raiders pay a visit, and will get a second shot at Benton Community as the Bobcats are in town on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Notes from the scoring table:
Jake Neubauer led CCA with eight points including a pair of 3-pointers. The sophomore has been averaging 4.7 points per game.
Keyan McAreavy had five points, as did Aaron Akers.
Noah Whittinghill, a sophomore, had a four-point night.
Nile Rourke, a junior, was held to three points. Rourke had been averaging 14 points per game.
Mitch Stopko, Cal Miller, Cody Wagner, Drew Wagner and Killian Walters all had two points each. Matthew Suther and Sage Spiker had one point each.
