CCA falls to Western Dubuque-Epworth

EPWORTH– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity softball team was dealt a setback Wednesday, June 7, on the road at Western Dubuque High School in Epworth as the host Bobcats took a doubleheader with 22 runs total. The Creek Girls had pulled off a split against Williamsburg on the road Tuesday, June 6, to improve to 5-7 overall.
The Clippers opened the first game at Western Dubuque with three runs in the top of the first inning from an Ainsley Schrock home run, but the Bobcats cut the gap with two in the bottom half. The Creek Girls put up one more in the second, but the lead disappeared as Western Dubuque had a three-run bottom of the second and followed up with two more in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth. The Clippers scattered eight hits from Abbi Kinnaird (three, including one double), Schrock (two, including the three-run homer), Claire Navara (one), Riley Hennes (one) and Danielle Wnek (one). Raina Henze took the loss with six innings in the circle. She gave up 14 hits (including two home runs) and 11 runs (eight earned) while striking out six and walking one.
The nightcap ended early on the mercy rule after the Bobcats drove in two runs in the bottom of the first, six in the second and three in the fourth. The Creek Girls could only get two hits from Kinnaird and Lydia Banwart. Payton Grafft and Jaelynn Ernst split the pitching duties for CCA with Grafft taking the loss after four innings. She gave up seven hits (including one homer) and eight runs (two earned) while Ernst gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Creek Girls hit rough seas in Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s tournament Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10, with an 0-4 showing against Dubuque Senior (5-1), Jefferson (10-5), Johnston (12-0) and Southeast Polk (13-0) to bring the Clippers’ record to 5-13.
Schrock had a pair of doubles and Katie Pitlick had an RBI single in the Dubuque Senior game while Kinnaird homered against Jefferson. Kinnaird led at the plate with four hits and two RBIs for CCA, Hennes and Schrock had two hits each (including a double for Hennes), while Navara, Abby Crow and Pitlick had one hit each.
The Clippers head for Fort Dodge Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, for a tournament and are home on Monday, June 19, against Independence in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. in Oxford. The Creek Girls visit South Tama on Wednesday, June 21, for a doubleheader against the Trojans starting at 6 p.m.
