CCA girls end regular season

A hole too deep

TIFFIN– “(We were in) too deep of a hole to recover from,” Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls basketball coach P.J. Sweeney said of a loss at home to West Branch Thursday, Feb. 8. The Bears took the non-conference game, 51-41, and ended the regular season for the Clippers at 11-10 ahead of postseason play.
“I was extremely happy with the fight,” Sweeney added. “They never gave up!”
The Creek Girls trailed the Bears 17-8 at the end of the first period and scored nine points in the second for a 38-17 halftime deficit. The Clippers rallied back in the fourth quarter with a 15-point effort while holding West Branch to only four points, but as Sweeney pointed out, the damage was done, the hole too deep.
Karsyn Stratton led CCA with 16 points while Meagan Harvey contributed 10.
The loss came in the wake of a 70-30 loss to the undefeated Marion Indians Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Marion. Jordan Neely led the Creek Girls with eight points while Stratton and Harvey produced seven points apiece against the Indians.
The postseason started Wednesday, Feb. 14, as Dubuque Wahlert and Liberty High tangled in a Class 4A Region 4 quarterfinal game in Dubuque. The Creek Girls will face the winner of that contest Saturday, Feb. 17, at home at 7 p.m. The regional final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the site of the highest-ranked remaining seed. Waterloo East and Independence also tangled on Feb. 14, while Marion awaits the winner in a semifinal for the top half of the bracket.
