TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School family of staff and students are coming together to raise money for Jane and Jeff Astor, longtime teacher and coaches at CCA.
On Dec. 11, CCA High School will host a pasta dinner fundraiser during the boys’ basketball game against Center Point Urbana. The evening will include a silent auction and dessert auction. The fundraiser will assist with the medical costs and travel expenses associated with Jeff’s medical treatments.
Jeff Astor was diagnosed in the spring of 2013 with Myeloid Dysplastic Syndrome (MDS), refractory anemia with excess blasts, a type of Leukemia in the bone marrow. He was able to find a bone marrow donor through the National Be The Match program. In May 2014, after several rounds of chemotherapy, Jeff received a bone marrow transplant at The University of Iowa. He was on the road to recovery when Jeff’s cancer returned in November 2014. After trying a different chemotherapy treatment, his diagnosis was grim, with 55 percent of his bone marrow cells showing leukemia. A new chemotherapy treatment plan was put into action and Jeff received two additional infusions of new bone marrow cells from the original donor. Jeff has spent numerous month-long visits in the hospital with various health complications. He is currently pursuing a treatment option at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas, after a referral by The University of Iowa.
Jeff recently retired after over 15 years of working at Rockwell Collins in Coralville, unable to return to work. Jane Astor has worked as a high school teacher and cross country and track and field coach at CCA for over 30 years, and Jeff served as assistant track and field coach for many years, as well. Jeff and Jane have supported families in need frequently throughout their lives together. Jeff donated blood regularly, which has been given back to him with the weekly blood and platelet transfusions he has endured throughout his illness.
“This family has been incredibly positive and strong despite the many setbacks. Let’s give them back the support that they have generously given throughout their life,” said colleague Teri Schultejans.
