CCA trap team finishes season at state competitions
TIFFIN– The CCA High School trap team participated in the Iowa High School State Trap Shooting Championship and the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) trap championship events on May 30 and 31. To compete at the state event, shooters must participate in an invitational league and shoot at least four events to qualify.
Friday, May 30, state championship:
The CCA Blue Squad, consisting of Grant Helle, Cody Wagner, Landon Owens, Emily Klein and Nick Walker, placed 12th out of 232 squads. Emily Klein, with a score of 90 out of 100, tied for 12th place out of 247 women, and Landon Owens placed 29th out of 1046 men with a score of 96 out of 100.
Saturday, May 31, SCTP championship:
Freshman Matt Demmel tied for first place, putting him into a shoot-off in the SCTP national qualifying round. Out of 362 junior varsity men, Demmel won first place after two shoot-offs with a score of 98 out of 100.
The CCA Blue Squad, consisting of Helle (96), Owens (98), Tyler Kasper (95), Klein (95), and Walker (97), placed third out of 74 senior varsity squads, with a team score of 481 out of 500. Klein tied for third place out of 103 varsity women, which put her in a shoot off and ultimately landed her a fifth place win. Owens tied for 21st place out of 463 varsity men.
CCA had 20 participants from grades nine through 12 on this year’s trap shooting team, with practices beginning in March, the invitational league running from April to mid-May, and culminating in the state events at the end of May.
The CCA trap team this year consisted of seniors Tyler Kasper, Mark Lewis, Austin McKinney, Conor Schneider, Cody Wagner, Mitch Walker and Nick Walker; juniors Kylie Demmel, Grant Helle, Shanna Iglehart, Garrett Miller and Chris Tomas; sophomores Emily Klein, Landon Owens, and Mollie Upton; and freshman Megan Cronbough, Matt Demmel, Mitchell Morlan, Danny O’Rear and Jack Pettinger.
“Overall, this year the team excelled in every aspect as far as their overall attitudes, practice, competitions, fundraising efforts, etc.,” said head coach Chris Herr, who is assisted by coach Joel Demmel. “Everyone really had good team spirit as they supported each other while competing.”
