Challenging week for Spartans

WATERLOO– Against Central DeWitt and Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Solon’s varsity Spartans managed only seven runs over three games.
Against Waterloo Columbus, the Spartans scored 21 runs in one night.
The Solon baseball team went 1-5 last week, dropping its overall record to 12-8.
“This past week was very challenging for our baseball team,” said head coach Keith McSweeney. “Our defense broke down on several occasions and some injuries really extended our pitching staff.”
The Spartans dropped both ends of a doubleheader on the road at Central DeWitt (10-3, 3-2), fell to Cedar Rapids Jefferson at home (6-2) then split a pair with Waterloo Columbus (a 10-2 loss and a 11-6 win).
“We were able to win the one-run games earlier in the season because of sound defensive play, and unfortunately, we were on the other end of some close ball games when our defense faltered,” McSweeney said.
At Central DeWitt, the Sabres chased starter Todd Oberthien after a third of an inning and put 10 runs up on the board in the first two innings on the way to the 10-3 win. Only seven of the runs were earned.
Solon was limited to eight hits in the game, and only seven hits in the nightcap. Austin Holub went 2-3 with an RBI, while Chris McNutt tripled to score a run.
Nathan Hawkins went the distance on the mound, allowing only one earned run, scattering five hits and striking out seven.
Even fewer hits, five, hampered the Spartans when they hosted Jefferson Wednesday. Pitcher Mitch Silberstein allowed 10 hits but only two earned runs while striking out three.
The offense awoke Thursday in Waterloo.
Elijah Kane went 5-5, scored three times, hit a home run and collected three RBI to lead Solon. Connor Fitzpatrick was 2-3 with a walk. The Spartans banged out 10 runs on 12 hits, but couldn’t contain Waterloo Columbus in a see-saw battle that saw the Spartans come up just short despite scoring two runs in the final inning.
The only win of the week came in the nightcap, when Solon ground out 11 runs on 11 hits, with Colton Dall going 2-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Dalton Ferguson went 2-3 and Lucas Kane went 3-4 with a double.
Tim Lance pitched all seven innings, allowing a single earned run while striking out three in the 11-6 win.
“The keys for our team to get back on track this week are to shore up defensively, work on hitting the ball to all fields, and to heal up,” McSweeney said. “This is a big week for our team as we need to rebound.”
The Spartans were scheduled to play a doubleheader in Anamosa Monday (June 24), host Clear Creek Amana for two games Wednesday, then travel to Williamsburg for two on Friday.
