City elections to be held Nov. 3: Filing deadline for most cities is Sept. 17

JOHNSON COUNTY– City government elections will be held Thursday, Nov. 3. Below are important deadlines for anyone considering running for office. Beginning this year, city election candidates should file their nomination papers with the Johnson County Auditor’s office, not with their respective cities.
Vacancies in this area include:
· North Liberty: Three council seats (four-year terms)
· Oxford: Mayor (two-year term), three council seats (four-year terms)
· Shueyville: Mayor (two-year term), three council seats (four-year terms)
· Solon: Mayor, two council seats (four-year terms)
· Swisher: Mayor, three council seats (four-year terms)
· Tiffin: Mayor (two-year term), two council seats (four-year terms). One council seat (two-year term to fill vacancy)
The cities of Coralville and North Liberty require 25 signatures. All others cities require 10 signatures.
Dates & Deadlines:
· Aug. 10-27: Candidate filing period, Iowa City/University Heights ONLY.
· Aug. 24-Sept. 17: Filing period for all other cities.
· Friday, Oct. 23: Voter pre-registration deadline, 5 p.m. Voters can still register after this deadline using the election day registration procedure.
· Friday, Oct. 31: deadline to request absentee ballot by mail, 5 p.m.
· Monday, Nov. 2: Postmark deadline for absentee ballots to be counted.
· Tuesday, Nov. 3: Election Day. Polls open 7 a.m. or noon (to be determined by cities), close at 8 p.m.
