City High ends West’s season 3-2
IOWA CITY– The West High volleyball team, whose 2012 slogan reads “We don’t rebuild, we reload,” came up just a bit short on ammo as they faced City High in the Class 5A regional semifinal last Thursday, Oct. 25.
City High won 3-2 and advanced to the regional final while West’s season came to an end.
It was a back-and-forth shootout until the very end.
The Little Hawks were hungry for a win, having been defeated three times last year, including a five-set state tournament match that went West’s way. Earlier this season, the Women of Troy pulled off a surprise 3-0 win over City and kept the coveted Spike traveling trophy.
Last week, West edged ahead of City 26-24 to win the first set, but suffered a set-back in the second, losing 15-25. The third set saw resurgence in coach Kathy Bresnahan’s crew as they won 25-22. The battle swung back to the Little Hawks in the fourth set as City High took it 25-21. City took the fifth set 15-12 for the victory.
Laynie Whitehead led the attack for West with 11 kills; Ally Disterhoft had nine while Hannah Fairfield made six. Mikaela Morgan and Mollie Mason had three each, Toni Martins had two kills and Lizzy Klemme scored one. Klemme had 17 assists, Whitehead made 11 while Leah Best, Disterhoft, Fairfield, Martins, Mason and Madi Miller had one apiece.
Miller led in digs with 17, Martins had 14. Defensively Fairfield had a pair of solo blocks while Disterhoft had five block assists. Whitehead had four block assists and it was three for Fairfield. Klemme and Mason were perfect in serves at eight-for-eight and seven-for-seven respectively. Aces were served up by Miller, Morgan and Whitehead. The match was the final performance by seniors Disterhoft and Emily Merdinger.
West ended the season with a 20-17 record.
