City still no match for West High

Little Hawks 41, Trojans 73
West High’s Connor McCaffery flattens City High’s Mitch Wieland while going up for two points at home last Tuesday, Feb. 11. McCaffery had a seven-point night

IOWA CITY– It was probably like déjà vu for the City High Little Hawks last Tuesday night as once again the West High Trojans trounced them on the hardwood.
In early January, the Trojans journeyed across town to administer a 70-34 pounding of their rivals. In the Feb. 11 rematch, the second half of a girl-boy doubleheader in a packed West High gym, the Trojans came away with a 73-41 victory.
West took a quick 6-0 lead as David Dileo put the Trojans on the board, Wyatt Lohaus scooped up a loose ball and brought it downtown to score, and Dileo scored again. Tanner Lohaus and Connor McCaffrey made it 11-2 while Nick Gallagher made it a lucky 13. Chike Ukah brought some razzle-dazzle to the party early with a dunk, just like big brother Okey used to do to the delight of Trojan Nation. Dileo struck again as the Trojans took a 17-2 lead at the end of the first period.
The Little Hawks attempted to rally back in the second period, but West continued to hold the lead powered in part by a Wyatt Lohaus 3-pointer and pair of field goals from Ukah. Coach Steve Bergman’s Trojans had a comfortable 30-16 lead at the halftime break. In the third Ukah pulled off another rim-hanging jam making it 34-18, Wyatt Lohaus had back-to-back two-point shots, Dileo nailed a 3-pointer and Devontae Lane and Adam Klein saw playing time and added field goals as the Trojans took a 52-27 lead into the final quarter.
Wali Parks, McCaffrey, Lane and Dileo kept up the assault building a 61-37 lead. Gallagher scored two more points on a put-back as reserves ruled the floor. Malik Williams, Marquise Yarbrough, Harley Shear and Nick Spiess all saw playing time with Spiess and Yarbrough scoring the final two baskets of the night.

Notes from the scorer’s table:
Coach Bergman was honored before the game for 86 wins and six losses for the current crop of seniors including a 60-game consecutive winning streak.
Wyatt Lohaus’ 17 points led everybody.
Mitch Wieland and LaDarius Taylor both led City High with 10 points apiece.
David Dileo had 16 points including a 3-pointer, Chike Ukah scored 10 points, Connor McCaffrey continued to make noise as a freshman with seven points and Nick Gallagher had six.
Wali Parks scored four points while Devontae Lane, Nick Spiess and Adam Klein had three points each. Marquise Yarbrough had a two-point night for West.
