Clear Creek Amana Foundation Hall of Fame honors 2013 inductees

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana Foundation held its Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday, Oct. 25, during the half-time of the junior varsity football game. Honored were 2013 Clear Creek Amana Hall of Fame inductees Bill J. Leischenring and Darrell Wallace.
was born on June 19, 1956, grew up and lived in Amana his entire life, living in the same house that was built when he was born in 1956. Bill is a 1974 graduate of Amana High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. He is the president and owner of the Ox Yoke Inn and Life’s a Banquet, LC, where he started in 1974 and has served in all capacities for his business.
Bill is a member of several organizations, including: the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids; Iowa Restaurant Association from 1980–1996, where he served as chairman of the board in 1992 and currently as an honorary director; National Restaurant Association from 1988–1997 where he represented the State of Iowa and is currently an honorary director; National Livestock and Meat Board from 1990–1994 which represents the National Restaurant Association; Kirkwood Community College Food Service Advisory Board; Amana Colonies Convention and Visitors Bureau from 2009–2012 and 1990–1998 where he was president of the board from 1993 until 1996 and in 2011; Amana Community School District 1979–1982; and the Clear Creek Amana Community School Foundation from 2004– 2010 where in 2007, Bill assisted in starting the Clear Creek Amana Masters golf tournament which is a fundraiser for scholarships and endowments. Bill was a Clear Creek little league coach for two years and he operated the Clear Creek Amana High School Softball Concession Stand for two years.
Bill received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Kirkwood Community College in 1994 and the Restaurateur of the Year, Iowa Restaurant Association Award in 1995.
Bill has been married to Karen since 1983 and they have two children, Lauren and Taylor. Both were graduates of Clear Creek Amana and the University of Iowa. Lauren and her husband Austin currently live in Newark, Del. Taylor and her Fiancée currently live in North Liberty.
Bill’s hobbies include reading, golfing, and traveling and while the girls were in school, Karen and Bill attended their many activities.
Darrell Wallace was born in Burlington, Kan. on Feb. 18, 1939, and lived there until 1945, at which time his family moved to the North English and Kinross area. Darrell graduated from North English High School in 1957. He played football, basketball and track.
Darrell was the transportation and maintenance director for the Clear Creek Amana School District from 1977–2001, retiring in 2001. Darrell also drove the school bus on routes and activities from 1977–2012 for Clear Creek Amana. From 1999–2012, he drove the school bus for activities for Regina schools.
Darrell was involved in many community activities. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, past president of the Oxford Optimists, a member of the Clear Creek Amana Booster Club, volunteering for several of their activities, and also served as a 4-H leader for the Cosgrove Hustlers 4-H Club from 1975–1982. Darrell coached his sons for several years in the Clear Creek little league and was also a member of the Clear Creek Little League Board.
Darrell married Eileen (Volk) on Sept. 25, 1965 at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove, and was married to her for 47 years. Darrell passed away on April 21, 2013. They have four sons, all Clear Creek Amana graduates: Jeff (1985) and Dawn Morrissey of Iowa City, have three children– Brady (13), Kennedy (12), and Madigan (10) who attend Regina schools; Dan (1986) and wife Kristine of Denver, Colo, have two children– Kenna (9) and Jacqueline (6), who attend school in Denver; Bob (1988), Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and Steve (2001) and Jessica, of North Liberty.
Darrell’s many hobbies included woodworking, baking cookies and bread, and gardening. Most important to Darrell was his family, especially his children and grandchildren, and he loved attending their events.
Congratulations to Bill Leichsenring and Darrell Wallace for being inducted into the 2013 Clear Creek Amana Hall of Fame. Their commitment to the community is outstanding, and the district thanks them for their service.
The Hall of Fame was created in 2001 by the Clear Creek Amana School Board and the Clear Creek Amana School Foundation board of directors to honor those who have made significant and lasting contributions to the district and community.
With the Clear Creek Amana Foundation Hall of Fame, the Clear Creek Amana Foundation honors individuals who, through outstanding service and dedication, give of themselves to ensure that our schools and our children achieve excellence.
Anyone wishing to nominate a community member for the 2014 Clear Creek Amana Hall of Fame can do so by submitting a letter of recommendation by Sept. 1, 2014.
