Clear Creek Boys clobber Panthers, 14-3

CCA earns first postseason win since ‘15 with 14-3 victory over Mt. Pleasant

SOLON– Friday the 13th turned out to be the Clippers’ lucky day as the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball team pounded the ball early and often for a 14-3 win over the Panthers of Mount Pleasant in a Class 3A Substate 5 District 9 first round game in Solon.
The Creek Boys put two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Cam “Lender” Armstrong hit a sacrifice fly to score Sam Young, and Cody Ogden drilled a solo homerun.
Momentum was on the Clippers’ side as they unleashed a nine-run barrage in the second, helped in part by Panther miscues. Casey Ogden singled followed by Young and Armstrong walking to load the bases. Cody Ogden was walked, bringing in Casey for a 3-0 lead, which was followed by a two-RBI double by David Jensen. Camden Smyka smacked a long-range bomb, which got him to third base and drove in two more runs for a 7-0 lead.
The Panthers changed pitchers, but soon-to-be-freshman Ben Swails, , blasted a three-run homer making it 10-0. An RBI single by “Lender” made it 11-0. Swails produced an RBI single in the third for a 12-0 lead, while Jensen hammered a two-RBI single with an extra base in the fourth.
The Panthers scored one runner in the bottom of the inning and snatched a two-run homer from Armstrong in the fifth.
Armstrong earned the win, pitching all five innings and giving up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out two. Young, Jensen, Swails and Casey Ogden had two hits apiece with a double for Young and homer for Swails. Armstrong, David Jensen, Smyka, Grant Jensen, Cody Ogden and Tyler Schrepfer had one hit each with a homer for Ogden.
The win improved the Clippers’ record to 19-19 and was their third in a row. It was also their first postseason win since 2015 when they defeated Grinnell in the first round of District play before falling, 1-0, to rival Williamsburg in the District Final. Mount Vernon sank the Clippers, 6-3, in the 2016 First Round game and Central DeWitt shut them out, 3-0, in last year’s opening round.
The Clippers were set on a collision course with the Solon Spartans, who blasted Keokuk, 15-1, following the CCA-Mount Pleasant game. CCA and Solon (30-10) met Monday, July 15, in Solon in the District 9 Championship with the winner advancing to face the District 10 Champion Wednesday, July 18, in Solon for a shot at the State Tournament.
