Clipper girls blow past opponents on way to state

SOLON– It’s hard to faze the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity softball team.
On the road for six games in the sweltering heat, the Clipper girls cranked by their opponents by a combined score of 63-14 last week. With a win Tuesday at Burlington, CCA is poised to finish at 40-1, with the lone loss coming against Ankeny 10-0 in the championship game of a Ft. Dodge tournament June 16.
That loss was avenged Saturday at an Ottumwa tournament where the Clipper girls upended No. 1 in Class 5A Ankeny, 10-5.
Mariah McKinnon pitched only an inning before giving way to Miranda Hochstetler on the mound. Hochstetler struck out five and allowed a single earned run in five innings of work.
Caitlin Wnek led the offense with a home run and three RBI. Seven different batters earned an RBI, and nine managed at least one hit.
Ankeny jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but CCA stormed back, scoring in five consecutive innings to put the game away.
The Clippers rolled past Cardinal of Eldon (7-1) and Southeast Polk (10-2) to earn the rematch against Ankeny. Hochstetler and Maliah Fligg pitched complete games in those games, allowing no earned runs.
Wnek pounded two home runs against Southeast Polk, going 2-3 with a walk and three RBI. Fran Strub had three stolen bases. Jazmyne Neely was 2-4 at the plate with a double and three RBI.
Earlier in the week, CCA cruised to a doubleheader victory over Vinton-Shellsburg, 15-2 and 10-0, in shortened games.
Mariah McKinnon scattered four hits in the first game, while Fligg and Hochstetler combined on the mound in the nightcap. Fligg struck out seven in four innings of work.
Wnek picked up three more RBI with a home run, while Riley Ogden, Neely and McKinnon had doubles.
It took all seven innings for the Clippers to push past the No. 1 team in 3A Wednesday, June 27. CCA defeated Solon for the second time in a week, 11-4, but the Spartans held the edge until the sixth inning when CCA took at 5-4 lead. The Clippers broke it open with six runs in the seventh inning.
Fligg took the win on the mound, with McKinnon pitching 2/3 of an inning in relief.
CCA has six stolen bases on the night, with a three-RBI outing by Tara Wells.
