Clippers ready to set sail on the trails
TIFFIN– 2013 was a good year for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers boys’ varsity cross country team. Coach Jane Astor is looking for a repeat at the least, and perhaps an even better finish this year.
Astor, in her 23rd season with the Clippers, also coaches the girls’ varsity team along with assistant Ben Robison.
The boys had a 91-32 showing last year, taking 12th in the state meet, fifth in the conference meet and winning the state qualifying meet. Austin Smith and Dylan Wolfe are the seniors among the returning letter winners and are joined by juniors Ben Alcorn, Jacob Tenner and Eric Douglass. Sophomore Luke Wingert is also back.
“The boys’ team has a lot of state qualifiers returning from last season,” Astor said. “Ben (Alcorn) returns after placing well as an individual at the state meet. Eric (Douglass) and Jacob (Tener) will help lead the team.” Wolfe, she added, “will add leadership and courage to our team.” Wolfe was 104th in the state meet with a time of 35:14.0. Alcorn led the Clippers with a 14th place finish in 16:56.2; Douglass was 51st in 17:35.8 while Tener was 73rd with a time of 18:01.6.
Wyatt Sedlacek is new to the squad this season, and Astor expects he will add a little more depth to the team.
The Clipper girls had a 35-81 record with a 12th place showing in the conference meet and 10th place finish at the state qualifying meet. Chloe Keith is the sole returning senior letter winner with juniors Hannah Smigel, Kelli Murray and Lori Drake.
“The girls have experience in Kelli (Murray) and Chloe (Keith). Each will lead our pack on any given day.”
