Community invited to celebrate groundbreaking for pavilion at Penn Meadows Park

NORTH LIBERTY– A groundbreaking for the new Penn Meadows Park Pavilion and Commemorative Baseball Diamond is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the park’s north side, near Penn Street. The pavilion, built in partnership between the City of North Liberty and North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS), will add restrooms, a shelter, storage and a concession stand to the heavily-used park and sports complex.
The groundbreaking ceremony will include remarks from NLYBS president Scott Rundle, city representatives and community sponsors, a ceremonial turning of dirt and a display of the engraved bricks that the community has sponsored and will make up the Commemorative Baseball Diamond. All community members are welcome to attend the celebration and enjoy refreshments.
NLYBS has committed to contributing $250,000 to the $500,000 project over the next five years and has pledges of support from Scheels All Sports, the University of Iowa Community Credit Union and North Liberty Optimist Club. Additional contributions from the community are coming through engraved bricks that will make up the Commemorative Baseball Diamond courtyard, leaving a lasting legacy that will be incorporated into the overall project.
NLYBS has organized baseball and softball in the North Liberty community for 23 years. This spring, 924 kids participated in learning good sportsmanship, respect and teamwork through playing ball at Penn Meadows Park.
