Community leaders supporting ‘Spread the Love’ PB&J drive through February

IOWA CITY– Businesses and organizations throughout Johnson County are hosting peanut butter and jelly drives this month as part of the Crisis Center’s “Spread the Love” campaign.
The Crisis Center encourages PB&J donations to the food bank throughout the month of February. Peanut butter in particular is a good source of protein and other nutrients for food bank clients.
Some groups participating in “Spread the Love” this year include City of Iowa City employees, North Central Junior High staff and students, and AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance employees. Leaders from those organizations shared their reasons for donating.
“The drive aligns nicely with the city wellness committee’s goals related to raising awareness not only about issues like nutrition and hunger, but also the concept that factors like community and engagement are also valuable contributors to one’s overall wellness,” said Karen Jennings, Human Resources Administrator for the City of Iowa City. “The feedback from employees so far has been great. We’re having fun with it and we’re getting lots of donations from staff,”
North Central Junior High students are also learning about community engagement and service.
“The reason we are participating in the Spread the Love campaign is to ask the students to reflect on the lives of the less fortunate, and realize their own role in the world to help out when they can,” said art teacher Kate Kostenbader, who designed a “Spread the Love” mural now on display in the school.
For AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance employees, the campaign is all in a day’s work.
“It’s in our culture at AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance to support the community in which we live and work, so when we heard about the ‘Spread the Love’ campaign we were all in. The Crisis Center is a great organization that does so much for our community and we are proud to support them,” said Amanda Ealy, AW Welt Ambrisco Marketing Assistant.
There is still time to collect and donate jars of peanut butter and containers of jelly. People may also donate directly to the Crisis Center, which allows the organization’s food bank to make bulk purchases at cheaper prices.
