Community Stories May 16 Open House spotlights communities

CORALVILLE–What stories do you have, just waiting to be told?
Johnson County has many, and for the past few months, people throughout the county have gone in search of them. They opened their scrapbooks, rummaged through old papers, and hunted in the archives to put together accounts of times gone by as well as the present. The result is the Community Stories Project—a permanent museum exhibit showcasing the cities, towns and villages that make Johnson County special.
The exhibit is a collaborative effort between the historical society and people from each community.
“This exhibit would not have been possible without the partnership of the communities,” said Wendy Henerlau, coordinator of the Community Stories Project. “It has been rewarding meeting with people throughout Johnson County. Each place I visited has its own personality, but the one thing in common is pride of place. This exhibit reflects that pride.”
The public is invited to the opening reception of the Community Stories Project on Saturday, May 16, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Remarks will be at 2:30, with people from the communities talking about their search for local history. Refreshments will be provided courtesy of Ms. Susan’s Catering. The museum is located at 860 Quarry Rd., at the Iowa River Landing in Coralville.
The Johnson County Historical Society Museum provides a permanent home to the Society’s treasure trove of more than 12,000 historic artifacts that portray the diverse and vibrant heritage of the county, from Native Americans to early settlers to contemporary times.
This project was funded in part by a grant from the Iowa Community Cultural Grant Program administered by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and by a grant from the State Historical Society, Inc. For more information about the Community Stories Project call Wendy Henerlau at 351-5738.
