Cool victory for Clipper boys

CCA boys open with 3-0 win in frigid weather

TIFFIN– Tim Benson’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity soccer boys took to the field Monday, April 1, to face the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie in a season-opening girls/boys doubleheader. With temperatures in the low 30s and a persistent wind out of the west-northwest, the conditions were more appropriate for winter.
The weather did not hinder the lads, however, as the Clippers took a 3-0 victory. Niels van Elsas, a senior, scored twice while sophomore Jon Jacobson scored one goal. Van Elsas scored with 21:36 remaining in the first half and again with 10:30 to go in the second half. Jacobson torpedoed the Hawks’ goal with 8:38 left in the second half. Van Elsas had one assist as did seniors Josh Martinac and Mani Espinoza.
On Tuesday, April 2, Dyersville Beckman welcomed the Clippers by defeating them 3-1. CCA gave up an early goal before holding off the Blazers for most of the first half. A late goal put the Clippers down 2-0. Van Elsas scored on a free kick in the second half and the tying goal was nixed by an offsides call before a late goal by Beckman sealed the Clippers’ fate.
Thursday, April 4, found the Clippers facing Central DeWitt and taking a 5-0 win. Van Elsas put up four goals and assisted Bryan Marmolejo, who scored with a “bicycle kick.” Mass was perfect in the goal. Marmolejo, Andrew Beckler, Miguel Mosaquites and Connor Mougin put up stiff defense to shut-down the Sabers.
And then, there was the ADM Tournament in Adel on Saturday, April 6. The Clippers faced East Des Moines first thing and gave up three goals in seven minutes in the first half. Benson’s boys regrouped in the second and scored on a goal by Sebastion Calderon with the assist from Josh Martinac. CCA still lost 3-1 however.
The second match of the day pitted the Clippers against Council Bluffs St. Albert, with the Creek Boys prevailing 1-0 on a Van Elsas goal in the second half against the wind.
The third and final match was a 3-0 CCA win over Indianola. After a first half stalemate, Marmolejo scored on a header off a Van Elsas corner kick, Van Elsas scored on an assist from Pocasangre and Pocasangre scored on an assist from Mani Espinoza.
“Overall it was a good day picking up two wins and playing five straight halves of shut-out defense after the rough start,” Benson said. The coach added the grueling schedule was rough, but, “the experience was valuable and coming out with four wins is good considering the quality of our opponents.”
The Clippers will face the Sailors of Waterloo Columbus Friday, April 12, on the home turf with a 5 p.m. start. On Tuesday, April 16, Benton Community comes to visit with a 5 p.m. start as well.
