Cornell freshman killed north of Solon Saturday

SOLON– A Cornell College freshman and a man from West Union were killed in a two-car collision on Hwy. 1 between Mount Vernon and Solon Saturday night.
Madison “Addie” Hubert, an 18-year-old Cornell freshman from Evergreen, Colo., died in the crash. Wilbur Dennis Bigler, 68, of West Union, was also killed in the collision.
According to the Iowa State Patrol:
The crash happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday night near the intersection of Hwy. 1 and 120th Street, about two miles north of Solon.
Bigler was alone in a 2007 Buick Lucerne, and officers believe he was southbound on Hwy. 1 when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the center line and was broadsided on the passenger side by a 2007 Buick Rendevous driven by Jeffrey S. Bertucci.
Burtucci, 46, is of Muskegon, Mich. In his car were Sherri Ann Bertucci, 44, Colin Bertucci, 20, and Camden Bertucci, 16, all of Michigan, and Hubert, who died in the crash.
Colin Bertucci is a student at Cornell, and was a classmate of Hubert’s.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the state patrol, Mount Vernon Fire Department and Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance Service.
Hubert and Bigler were pronounced dead at the scene.
The four others in the crash were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics– Colin, the Cornell student, by Air Care, and the others by either the Lisbon-Mount Vernon Ambulance Service or by Johnson County Ambulance.
The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Addie and the injuries to Colin,” said Cornell president Jonathan Brand. “Cornell is a close community and everyone is affected.”
The college held a gathering Sunday morning at the residence hall where Hubert lived, and another campus gathering in the afternoon at Allee Chapel. A memorial service was also being planned.
Hubert is being remembered for what Cornell assistant professor of theater Jim VanValen called a “wonderful confidence.”
In high school, she studied at the Denver School of Arts and had been involved in theater since she was a young girl.
VanValen recalled her traveling from Colorado to Mount Vernon alone last March to audition for a scholarship.
“I was pretty impressed when I met her,” he said. “She was filled with courage, kindness and enthusiasm for the next adventure in her life.”
VanValen said faculty members “are always excited to see how these students grow and share their talents on campus. That’s what makes this heartbreaking– now we’ll be deprived of all that.”
